Unknown howling/foghorn noise when accelerating ***video

Anyone familiar with this howling/foghorn noise? I did do a site search.

Noise comes when accelerating from 40km/h to 80km/h. I can replicate easily by engaging and letting off of the gas pedal. It's hard to tell where it's coming from . It can also be somewhat heard at the end of braking.

The sound can be herd clearly from 0.40s mark onwards as I depress and release the gas.

All fluids except transfer case changed up..Told front sway bar bushings are good..Recent work done..inner + outer tie rods/two front axles/new rack and pinion with drive gear.

I have an appointment with the mechanic next week but as a female I would like to be as prepared as possible.

Crap found this video it 's a f*** but sounds exactly same and in same circumstances.

Anyone have idea what the repair would entail? Is the ring and pinion the gears? What would I expect the cost of new parts and how many hours labour is in the shop book?

How many miles on your truck. You can drain the pumpkin and check for metal replace with 80w90 or 75w90 gear oil. loosen the fill bolt first. That might buy you some time. edit: since gear fluid was changed disregard it.

Replacing ring and pinion around US $1200 . If you have hand tools and sockets. you can save by pulling the axles out, disconnecting the drive shaft, removing the 3rd member (heavy) and taking it in. Its a little bit of work but not complicated. videos on the forum will help.

Thanks for the info, just at 402000km Vehicle is new to me and not sure about previous maintenance...$1200 USD yikes that will be crazy in CDN $$.

Sound familiar?

Gears are likely fine, it's a bearing issue. You can try to replace the input yourself, or just send it to East Coast Gear Supply and get it rebuilt. Either that or start hitting the yards. Might be tough if you have a Limited.

I drove that truck with that noise for probably 2 years and 20k miles or so. Was still in it when the frame let go.

This issue is not very common. If you need a low-cost alternative, buy a used 3rd member (make sure it's the same gear ratio and either 4WD or 2WD) and replace it. It can be done in a garage with not too much issue, you do have to pull out both axles though.

Sounds exactly the same!

Is that the pinion bearing or something else?

I had it narrowed down to the input bearing. You'll find if you pull the rear shaft and drive it in FWD it's completely silent. Were it not I'd be looking at the carrier.

I'd bet money it's silent when you coast as well. You could tear it down and do it yourself if you're handy, or like I said in my previous post, just call these guys.....

ECGS

700 plus shipping. You'd be looking at 200 for parts alone DIY, and that doesn't come with any warranty. Finding a 4.30 diff at the yards is gonna be a pain in the ass.

I am having this same exact issue on my 2001 sr5. My mechanic said the best thing is to find the whole rear assembly and bring it to him to install. The problem is that i cant find one. There seems to be many variations to gearing, wheel sizing, abs, diff locks etc..
Its the only issue I have on this truck and besides that it runs sooo well. My heart is broken.

I needed a truck and had to drive 4 hours 2 times a week so I ended up buying another 4runner for the time being. It was sitting for over 3 years and its turning into a nightmare.

^^Are you talking new rear pumpkin?

I'm bracing for a big $$ bill...just had inner outer tie rods cv joint and rack and pinion done so I'm down $3k already. But at least now it's done and should be all good for 100,000kms+.

The least expensive way to get this fixed is going to be finding a used 3rd member (rear differential) with the same gears you currently have.

You can use this video to determine your gear ratio: How to find your differential gear ratio without stamps, tags, or tear down - YouTube

Once you know what gear ratio you have, you just need to search around and find a complete 3rd member. In the states, they are very easy to find. I'm not sure about Canada but it shouldn't be too bad. If you can turn a wrench, they are actually pretty easy to replace. If not, you could pay a shop to remove/install yours and it shouldn't be too bad. I would say 4 hours of shop time would be a ball park guess (brakes will need to be bled since you need to pull the axles to remove the 3rd member).

The most common gear ratio's on these trucks are 4.10, just hope that's what you have.

Thanks I appreciate the interesting link and info!
Heard back from the shop and it's the pinion bearing. I'm told the two gears don't line up anymore due to the bearing wear.
They're trying to source out a 3rd member. Indicated they do rebuilds on these all the time...

Update!

New ring and pinion install.

No more howling on acceleration but now have whistling after taking foot off gas and decelerating.

Hm... Curious if this is what I have.
Had all the symptoms of a bad needle bearing/CV play so I replaced both the axle and did the ECGS clamshell bushing. Didn't help.
Driveshaft was replaced but still groans. When in 4Hi the vibration goes away but noise does not, albeit not immediately so, it takes a minute or two. Gonna take out the front driveshaft this weekend to see if it makes a difference.
My noise isn't exactly the same but I have all the symptoms of a bad rear diff, it would seem. Vibe, roar, only with throttle, around 50mph. Wouldn't surprise me either, as the PO claimed to have replaced it but I have since found out none of his repairs are worth a damn (bad brake job, incorrectly assembled strut, etc.)
