well, I finally got time to take it all apart. the butterfly is returning to closed by itself. there's a small gap around it, but I believe there's supposed to be. the IAC valve appears to be operating normally, as much as I can tell. there's nothing stuck down in there, at least. the cables are somewhat slack, i.e. definitely not holding it open. The vacuum hoses seem to be fine. If I push the butterfly valve so that the very small, maybe a fat 1/32", gap closes, idle returns to normal. the throttle is not hitting the stop, so adjusting that wont help. I'm kind of at a loss here.
FWIW, I've had idle issue before after removing my air box and MAF, even if I did not clean anything.
The 'fix' was to loosen the cruise control cable (the one on the left), let the idle go back down, then re-tighten it with the engine running. So it ends up in the same place, but I had to 'trick' the computer, apparently. I guess the cruise part of the ECU was holding the RPMs higher.
Really wasn't even just idle issues, it was just a constant high rev, maybe 500 RPM higher at all points than it should be. Trying to let the ECU relearn did not help, either.
This has happened 2 or 3 times, and this fixed it without fail.
If anyone references this thread, I had the same issue after cleaning the MAF and throttle body (attached).
I was careful not to spray too much in the throttle body, just wiped down as far as my fingers allowed to get any crud off.
First initial drive, would idle around 1100-1200. But after a few more drives, it purs very smoothly at about 700. It would idle around 800 before, with subtle bounces here and there.
So just as a few people have mentioned, the high idling should go away after ECU adjusts from a few drives.
