UPDATE: Driveshaft "bump"

i was at one of my shops a few days ago which happens to be a Toyota dealer in their service dept looking at one of our insureds vehicles. Out of the mangagers office comes an old friend of mine who happens to be the service manager of the shop. so after shooting the sh!t for awhile I asked him about the driveshaft "bump" on the 4runners.

his response was:

very common problem. all 4th gen 4runners will or have done it, and greasing it only lasts about a month.

i asked about the driveshaft update and his response was:

they do have a new driveshaft and part number but it absolutely does not fix the problem. everyone we replace with the updated part and superceeded part number comes back for the same problem. you just have to have it greased all the time.

so for any of you that have the problem and the dealer gives you a hard time, this confirms that it is a known problem at the dealer but they do not want to admit it.

Ask your friend about the Lexus GX TSB that does indeed FIX THE PROBLEM PERMANENTLY. It involves getting a new driveshaft AND control arms.

where is it, i have only seen the TSB on the updated driveshaft. i have also read alot of info that people who have had the updated parts done says it comes back within 6 months.

ill check tomorrow with another friend at lexus to get his opinion.

Lubed mine about 19 months ago, and 20,000 miles later I still have no bump.
