**UPDATE** - DT has made right - Buyer Beware - Doug Thorley Headers

Hilex and Cloud, I got some Ocean front property in Arizona for sale.

actually... this is for anybody who doesn't seem to care about
False Advertising.

Hey Barfy or what ever it is no one is skeered.some of have to work for a living I just got off a 96 hour stretch and didnt have time for the childrens playground. Looking through your older post it appears your from the Toronto area why not admit it your are also deceiving. Yes it does matter because the area is notorious for eating cars away regardless off make and model. 4 years 70,000 miles 4 Colorado winters in the mountains numerous trips to Moab no problems. I have no affiliation with Thorley other than being a customer, who values family owned american hand made quality products .you need to take better care of your ride, Toyota has had a few recalls for rust and frame replacement maybe you should ditch it and cry to Toyota also.

I don’t get the direct attack on the OP alleging he doesn’t take care of his ride. Even if that were the case, don’t you agree that is basically irrelevant if it’s discussing a supposedly STAINLESS STEEL product that is also ceramic coated on top of that? And that’s not even getting into the whole “lifetime warranty” part... What is being discussed in this thread is deceptive advertising and claims on a product that we paid hard earned money for - period! For all intents and purposes, you should be able to drop these into the ocean, pull them out a few years later, and have them look pretty much the same based on their description and warranty. Infighting helps no one and just brings down an otherwise helpful forum.

Wow, glad to discover all this...
I TIG'd my own repair on the original factory manifolds, because DT was still considering production at the time, but I've always intended to "upgrade" when the necessity returned. So far, mine are still holding fine at 212k, but Whew! Dodged that bullet!

I work with plain steel, chromoly, and stainless tubing every day... The differences in price, and the cost of MIG vs. TIG, is just not anywhere near a big enough deal to justify this.

Care to cut the tubes off and weld the holes closed on mine?!?

My expertise is custom bicycles, but my business-neighbor is an auto mechanic. He has the lift and MIG welder, but I do the brazing and TIG welding.
As you know, it's the removal/installation that's a pain in the ass on these things, and I can't help you with that.

I've offered before, in various places at various times: Anyone who wants to send me their cracked factory manifolds, I'll weld the cracks and send 'em back. I'd estimate about $50-$100 per side, plus freight.
If you're in NE Ohio, you can bring the whole vehicle, and my neighbor buddy can do the remove/install. The total (both sides) then would be around $600-$700, in most cases, depending on frozen bolts, gaskets, and parts needed.

My own reasoning at the time, 5 years ago...
Thorley was just then thinking about making them, so that wasn't an option just yet, and I couldn't trust when it would become one.
OEM replacements are outrageous, partly because of the cats, but it made no sense to me to replace cracked ones with expensive known-flaws, only to have it happen again, almost guaranteed.
The cheap stainless aftermarkets had complaints, and seemed like junk, so...
I traded my rotted out XJ for the remove/install labor, and welded the cracks myself, figuring it was worth the risk. So far it's worked out. My welds are still silent after 75k miles, 212k total. Multi-thousand-mile road-trips, offroading, NE Ohio winters, and a heavy foot.

Yea I was was on my 2nd set of factory manifolds from Toyota! Both cracked and I'm working with them to pay for my last bill, but Toyota won't do it, I'm working with the dealer but don't think they are going to do it either. I'm happy with the THorleys and am glad to have something that's doesn't crack and getting me lot more miles to a tank. I'll try to get some photos when I get a break cause it's not easy for me to get on here unless it's my day off. Mine still look good and I blew my buddy away in his 2007 Gx when we did a highway run beside each other.

Good Read... Mine are still in the box, been there for 4 years or so...
I should not have any issues with rust living in Alabama,

but after reading all this... for some reason I feel like I am reading a missing script from the movie Tommy Boy.

Agreed... I find it really odd that DT and Jason B are not responding. Maybe they had to lawyer up and were told not to respond.

I don’t think it’s an issue for Jason B. as he is only a vendor. I do wish he’d at least share his thoughts though, and whether he has communicated with DT on our behalf, or not. There is NO chance he hasn’t seen, or been following this thread...:redbrick:

As for your uninstalled headers... even though you don’t deal with salt spray, the tubes will likely break down anyway from constant heat/cool cycles, it will just take a lot longer. If they were mine, I’d either have the tubes deleted, then recoat them, or have them replaced with stainless tubes, which would be the most expensive option, but you’d keep the factory emissions equipment (if that matters to you).

Yes that looks like mine. I can get you guys photos but mine looks the same. This whole thread reminds me of a trump rally and I voted for trump. My point is Trump says one thing and everyone else drinks the juice and assumes that's the way it is for EVERYONE. If it was the forum would be on fire with multiple people with the same issue. These have been out now for 4 years and the guy above has had his for a long time. It's known that Canada is the worst place on earth to have a vehicle. They don't mix their salt like here in the USA with other additives and it's full strength. I don't know if that's why you hid where you were from on this post but if you live in a place like that you must look after your vehicle. My cousin lives there and his frame is taking a toll too. I did tell him about the POR15 and his dealer is doing it for him. You just really need to watch after anything up in that area as it's the harshest.

Look at this screen shot I will try to attach. Guy has a brand new Range Rover. Do you think everyone that owns this same vehicle is going to rush out and sell it because one engine blew out of thousands made? Maybe they are going to drink the juice that every Range Rover is bad. I don't think so but maybe that's the new culture we live in

I don’t have any ill will towards Jason. But he is going to be involved. At the very least he and Doug Thorley are going to need to offer people their money back who still have them sitting in boxes should they want to return them.

Also, if anyone has gone through the bbb complaint yet, you have to mention that you bought them through a vendor which unfortunately brings him into the mix if that’s how you went about it.

This whole thing is super disappointing. I really can’t understand why they did not at least make the tubes stainless. As a Canadian, buying and installing these was like 2k. What a bunch of bullshit.

Cloud9

That is so ironic you would make a trump reference. That’s exactly who I thought of while reading your posts. You know, when you continually refused to answer the question I’ve asked you 5 times now. Then try to junk up the thread with other random stuff like a Range Rover post?

Also just to add to this, again, your trump like accusation I’m hiding my location, it’s literally in my profile where I live. What am I trying to hide? You’ve got some serious attention to detail problems. It’s concerning you continue to tell everyone you’re an engineer. I fear for any recipient of your work product.

I know this is hard for you understand, but let me explain this one more time for you:

The product is marketed as stainless steel. It is not. Regardless of whether yours are holding up well, and I hope they are for you, mine are an example of what can happen. More so, I assure you that I will not be the only person this happens to. And despite you trying to claim it’s because I don’t clean my engine bay every time I go driving in the winter, that’s an incredibly unrealistic expectation of anyone.

Finally, if folks see all of this, and decide for themselves that they don’t agree with something in this situation, it is for them to decide. Not you. So while you and HiLex try desperately to tel everyone they’re stupid and Doug Thorley is amazing, you’re wasting your breath.

What’s interesting is I’ve only ever talked about my experience on this thread, while you’re trying so hard to convince other people. Why is that?

this is a good read I have been waiting for their CA carb approval where they said they would send a sticker out when done. But, didn't believe they can pull it with the welding of the cat.

Hi all - as indicated in the update of my first post, Mike from DT Headers has responded. From what he says, they are going to make this right, support anyone who experiences the same issue, and will make design changes to their products that have mild steel tubing.

Here is the full email:

Good morning Matthew,

I have seen the discussion on the forum post you generated via the links attached and briefed from the customer service email. As I can tell you are frustrated with the listing of T304 SS Headers (Part# THY-563-SS-C) and them not stating that the air injection tubes were formed and made from mild steel. First let me explain how the main tubing was changed and the air-injection didn’t.

Our part number THY-562-SS-C (2005 Land Cruiser 4.7L)also, has the same type of construction. This was when the 562 headers were created they were listed at THY-562-C, and made from complete 14guague mild steel. After our first production run of 30 sets was created we began to see that the material was failing and welds cracking. Not close to the air tubes but in the collector area and tubing. Thus because we warranty for our material and workmanship we changed the material to T304 SS. The air tubes presented no challenges and to be completely transparent to our recorded warranties, you are the first with this issue in the air tubing. This also took place with the THY-561-SS-C headers in which started at THY-561-C. This header was changed for the exact same issues as the later models (tubing and cracks). This model however does not have the air injection rail, which is how this may have been potentially overlooked.

Going forward…These headers have been constructed the same way for many years and have had zero issues like this until yours, and others in the forum should also have confidence that this isn’t going to happen to them. Like I said this is an isolated incident. I would like to be very clear about this next part and please do not take my words and chop them up. My hope is that you can also be transparent and post this entire email.

Starting on our next production runs going forward, next is scheduled in early to mid-July (this can change if needed based on current demand), we will begin constructing these headers with Stainless Air Injection tubing. Once that production run is complete (4-5 weeks based on outside processing for ceramic coating) we will replace the current headers you have now. Others should also know that if they have rusted air injection tubes and proof of purchase they will also be covered. Like I have said, yours has shown the first incident like this and we are confident that others should not expect to have outcome that you have. This production change will effect part numbers THY-562-SS-C, THY-563-SS-C, & THY-563Y-LS-C.

My hope is that have I addressed your concerns and provided you with reasonable result. If you have any follow up questions or concerns that you address them with me directly. Also, I do request that if you feel that this is reasonable that you please follow up on your IG, and google comments.

Lastly, my personal information is below, like my cell phone number, I do ask that you DO NOT POST this, as this would be an invasion of my privacy. I don’t believe that this should be an issue between gentleman.

Very Respsectfully Submitted,

Micheal Johnson | Sales & Shipping Manager | Doug Thorley Headers

So:

I am glad this was addressed. I am glad they've decided to use stainless for the injection tubes. Am I going to have to pay to have my headers reinstalled? It seems like it. While that sucks, I feel okay with it considering they're replacing mine, and will help anyone else who has the same issue AND any new buyers will get a mostly stainless steel set (Flanges don't appear to be changing to SS. I've asked Mike to confirm).
