I'd skip the gopro. I have one. It's an expensive paper weight. Video quality from your old cell phone is probably better. Just buy a few mounts for the spare cell phone you probably have laying around and us it. Way more features, better video, and everyone has a few laying around. If you have a samsung you can link to your current phone for remote view and control and use it like a gopro.
For better video - mirrorless camera.
Unless you really need the small size for something - I would carefully consider whether a gopro is worth the $.
As a side note - I have a DJI Phantom - and the video quality is fantastic. BUT - unless you only want to use it around your car - wait for a good deal on a Mavic Pro. The size is a killer on the Phantom. It's just too bulky for casual use. I regret choosing the Phantom every time I use it.

Thanks for the advice, i think you may be right. I've been trying to weigh whether using my phone (Just ordered an iPhone XS Max) with a dash mount may be a better option and save myself the $200+.
Rock siders, a light bar and a bull bar was next on my list..
I got a 25.00 camera from amazon, forget the name, but they say its just as good as a gopro. I went this route to see if I would really use it enough to justify getting a better one.
well I really don't use it, but the batteries last forever, the video is really good too. it just doesn't have all of the features of a gopro, but it has what I need

Video action camera or dash cam
I was looking at the GoPro action cameras until I read some of the reviews.
A better option is the Sony FDR-X3000 Action Camera. It's got a better lens and more controls. It produces better videos. Here's a link with a lot more info, reviews and prices.

For simple offroading videos I got a dash cam for under $50. I wired it directly to the battery for always on operation but it works fine powered by a cigarette lighter plug. There are many similar dash cams to choose from. I got this one for it's narrower, 140 degree view. I felt 170 degrees is too wide for showing the road ahead.
