upgraded muffler performance?

I just put a performance muffle on my 4runner and I've noticed better performance at about 3000 rpm and above where it really pulls well. But when I first start up my truck in the morning, there are 5 mins where you have to put the pedal to the floor to get any forward motion. Almost feels like it isn't getting any air or fuel or something like that. Has anyone else experienced this with a new performance muffler? Would this have anything to do with the fact that I went to a 2.5" muffler from the 2" factory pipe? I've gotten used to it but my wife was driving my truck and though something was seriously wrong with it. Any suggestions to help with this? Thanks in advance!

I have a cherry bomb vortex muffler on my truck, what exactly did you put on yours? As for it not getting any air, try to do the deckplate mod. Just try searching for "deckplate" and it will give you a lot of results. I know when I first start up my truck my fan turns really fast and sounds loud. I hear that It happens on all 3rd Gens. But I have never had to put my pedal to the floor to get it to move.

I noticed this too when I changed to a magnaflow with 2.5" OD pipes. The stock 4Runner has metric pipes, but the closest match is a 2.25" ID pipe. By using a 2.5" OD pipe, you have reduced some of the scavenging effect hurting your low end torque. Not much you can do unless you switch to 2.25" ID pipe or go with a supercharger.
 
Thanks for the replies, I ended up putting an AERO muffler on since the shop I went to didn't sell Dynomax or Vortex. A friend put the same on his V8 Ford and it sounded great but mine sounds a little "ricey" if you know what I mean. Guess you can't make a V6 sound like a V8. Sounds like the deck plate mod is pretty popular so I may give it a try hope to get a few more MPGs. The other reason I'm a little concerned that my engine isn't running great is that I'm pretty consistently getting about 14-15MPG with the odd tank where I'd get 17-18MPG. Not great..... One other interesting thing that I noticed about my new muffler is that when I start it up, the muffler has a loud howling or hollow sound and sounds like it's sucking air, I never noticed it till my wife said something about it since the exhaust is on the passenger side and I don't hear it or smell it. She also mentioned that it smelt like gas. I do know about the fan things cause my old '88 used to do it as well. Might just have to take it in and get it scoped... I just expected a little more ummph out of my '99 V6, my last '88 was a stick and it seemed much more lively and sensitive on the throttle.
 
I would do the deckplate, seafoam oil and gas, when is the last time the fuel xfilter was changed? Um.. Let me think about other things.




Edit, could backpreasure be the problem to your gas millage problems?

Hey shootmymime, I have very similar cars in my garage.... from your profile picture it looks like a '69 Stang? I've got a red '72 Stang in mine with my 99 4runner. My bad gas mileage has been fairly consistent from before and after my new muffler. I'll try running some more cleaner through my system which I did when I first bought it but can't hurt to try some more. And I might as well put in a new fuel filter since I think it's pretty easy to get at. Cheers!
 
Quick update to my story... I took my truck into the garage and they discovered that the keyway on my crankshaft was worn out therefore the sprocket was slipping therefore my timing was off and therefore I had very poor vacuum. My timing belt was replaced at the dealership before I bought it and they never replaced the tensioner or pulley that was very rusted so I'm going to replace that as a precaution. Wonder if this was the original cause and just got worse and worse. Maybe I just realized it after I changed my muffler. Anyways, apparently a very uncommon thing so I hope I don't have a dud engine. My mechanic says he's only seen this about 3 times in over 20 years. I'm hoping to get 400-500k KMS on my 4Runner. Thanks to everyone that replied. I'm hoping to get better than 14 MPG with this repair. Cheers!

the smell is the fiberglass that is in the muffler. after a week or two, it will burn off and get loud(er).
-or it might just be the metal treatment burning up from manufacturing.
