Upgraded my inner fender splash shields

The stock inner fender splash shields (or lack of) are not the greatest. So I decided to make some better splash shields. I made some for my 2015 Tacoma, and 2014 F150 and they work great. I used some 1/16" sheet rubber that I found at my local Ace hardware. I designed and made a template then transferred it to the rubber. I used the factory holes and also made a few new ones and used some xmas tree push pins to hold everything in place. That's the super fast write up. LOL. Here are some pics. Enjoy!

My local Ace only sells it by the foot. The roll is 12" wide and I bought 7'. Think I spent $38 so $5.49 a foot. Because it's only 12" wide I had to cut the template in half in order to make it fit within the 12". So it ends up being two pieces that I joined together with a xmas tree push pin. Sorry it that was confusing. I can measure my template when I get home.

The template I made is 14" x 37.5" I think you could trim it down to 36" and still be able to use the outer most factory mounting holes.

My local Napa auto parts has the push pins. The bigger push pin works great for the factory holes. For the smaller pins I just drilled new smaller holes.

You could but there would be seams for the water to get in. Also the factory ones are not the greatest. LoL.

Good job! I need to do this for my 4th gen as those splash shields are literally falling off but I'd also like to do this on my 5th gen. The OEM shields are kind of cheesy are the push pins are even worse.

your write up came just in time, i've noticed the factory clips are creating a lot of squeaks and rattles so they need to go. was going to replace them and use some rubber washers to keep everything snug, but after seeing this i think i'll create some new splash guards while i'm at it. thanks

What a great idea. Thanks for posting this DIY upgrade. I used some 1/4" "rubber" sheet (synthetic) to shim the mount on my Baja Rack. OSH has the material in various thicknesses.
Just want to know if the heat of the exhaust manifold has any effect on the material?

back in 2000 I made up these with rubber roofing. very flexible and they are still working .. did both front and rear.

I plan on doing the same to my 2016. the shields Toyota used are cheap plastic crap. I already have purchased on amazon 100 of the plastic retainers.
I will use some card board to make a pattern then cut the rubber. rubber is 1/6inch and very strong. then I spray it will silicone. that keeps the road slop from sticking. protects the engine and under body from damage.. also brake lines on the 2000..

I second this question. There are so many different clips and different methods of removing them.

The clips are not your normal xmas tree clip. Toyota uses some weird step style clip. I just used a long nose pliers and pulled them out. A trim removal tool would work as well.

The rubber gets warm but not hot. I've had no issues on both my Runner and Tacoma.

The main reasons I wanted to do this project:
1) The damn factory push pins rattled and squeeked so much.
2) Mud and grime has flown up into my engine and makes me mad.

I shopped around Denver and found a roofing supply store that sold rubber EPDM in 10’ widths. I paid 20$ and got 2’ X 10’.
I used a screw type push pin from amazon:

There were a few holes that were too small for the aftermarket push pins so I just used the original factory ones.

I just installed the Rad Rubber splash guards and while I appreciate DIY and saving some money for $50 it was the easy button.

They’re high quality, come with all new clips, and enabled me to yank the old pieces of chit out, literally, and then just pop the new high-quality pieces in.

No more rattle, or squeak, and more coverage than stock. For anyone looking for an easy solve here, it’s hard to beat.
