Upgrading sound on 04 4Runner, but keeping stock HU.
Ok, so I've done lots of research on this and other forums to get familiar with stereo options out there. My understanding is that replacing head unit will give you the most impact in terms of improving sound quality. However, I have been through the aftermarket fever before with my previous cars and along with improved sound, I also got my fair share of new shakes and rattles.
This being my first ever brand-spanking new car (bought a Titanium V6 Sports 4Runner 2 weeks ago), I wish to retain the "factory look" and look for other ways to improve the stereo. So, I am looking for some suggestions.
I have researched the Kenwood KSC-WA62RC "wOOx" subwoofer and find it to be perfect for my needs. It's small and will fit under my seat and provide with enough base to suit me. I don't need to announce myself to any neighborhood from 10 blocks away...so I don't need the double 12" subs. Has anyone heard the Kenwood unit? Any comments?
Also, I know the base factory stereo I have (single cd/tape) is rated at 160W driving the six speakers. Could I buy a 4 channel amp to drive the door speakers and use the built in HU amp to drive the tweeters? The Kenwood sub is powered. Could I then cut the frequency to the stock speakers so that they handle mid-base and highs exclusively while letting the sub handle all base? I've read on more than one occassion that the stock speakers are not all that bad, so I will keep them for now.
I figure this will be the cheapest and easiest way to improve my sound. Although it won't be nearly as good as doing a complete overhaul, I think this will help.
What do you think?
