Upgrading Suspension - Have a few questions

Hey t4r,

It's come time to completely overhaul my suspension. The sway bar end bushings are mush and the shocks are totally gone. It's still on stock suspension, and I consider 125k miles traveled to be a great ROI. Sadly, it's snow season and I can't have a truck that handles like a pig. It's unsafe, and more importantly, it's no fun :)

Here's what I've come up with after doing research this afternoon

Bilstein 5100's - Adj Front, Rears - Down South MotorSports - 330$

And these swaybar bushings

19mm or 21mm grease-able body bushings - Rear Swaybar Body Bushings (two sizes because I haven't measured rear swaybar yet)
Plus these End Link Grommets - For rear only
30mm - Front Sway Bar Body Bushings Grease-able

My questions are,

Do I need new front shock stem bushings?

The second is, am I missing anything else?

Thanks!

Ryan

I think this is a better deal for those shocks but didn't look into shipping

Bilstein - KYB - Rancho - Monroe - Edelbrock Automotive Truck Shocks and Struts - Shockwarehouse.com

Why don't you upgrade your springs while you have everything apart you can get FJ springs rather cheap from what I read

FJ springs are rather hard to come by in Oregon, I've only ever seen a handful of sets for sale on craigslist. The phaseout of FJ's by Toyota isn't helping me either.

I'm doing these next week, since I don't have time the following 6 weeks. That means I don't have time to source new springs, which is unfortunate.

Is your intent to level out the truck front to back or to keep the OEM rack?

Level, otherwise I would have gone with 4600's

I did the 5100's (set at 0.85) with new V8 Moog springs. Leveled me out perfectly. I'm about 0.5 inches high in the back than the front. The new springs only cost me about $90 on Amazon.

What is the part number on those springs? Also, what do you think of the ride quality?

If it helps, Tacoma TRD springs were a lot easier for me to find than the FJ gear.

Moog 81088 and 81045

The ride is a little stiffer than stock but not annoyingly so. Still provide a very smooth ride.

I was going to do exactly what you are suggesting...

However, I too had a hard time finding FJ stuff and ended up getting an OME spring and shock kit from Toytec. I used a coupon code and couldn't be happier overall. I got rid of my leaky XREAS, tamed the soccer-mom ride to something more fitting, and added a small amount of lift to fit some nicely proportioned tires.

FWIW, I'd it is a Sport model, you likely have a 21mm bar. Ask me how I know ;)

for some reason I thought you had a 02
what year is your truck?

2007 SR5 4Runner

Measured today, 19mm rear 30mm fronts.

Ordered everything today, the swaybar bushings will be here Tuesday (Thanks Amazon Prime!)

If the suspension ships next monday, I'll have it in hand Wednesday or Thursday. SOcal to Oregon.

I'll likely go with the stock coils for now, and see how I like it. In my opinion, swapping suspension components isn't too hard on the 4Runner so if I want newer springs I can swap them at a later date.
