Upper Plenum (sp) Gasket

Morning good people! Quick question for you experts. I have a '95 , V6 w/ 4WD and I've replaced the engine twice. Recently, it has had a very rough idle, problems starting and this mysterious coolant leak. Took it to have a diagnostic on it and pressure test. No leaks were found, but the codes came back as a Lean Exhaust and Engine Knock.

My mechanic says that it's the Upper Plenum Gasket causing these problems. Does this sound about right? Can anyone explain this to me and is it a DIY fix?

Hmm, mine seems to be having the same sort of symptoms. Occasional rough idle. After a couple long highway trips it started to overheat a bit (after a new radiator mind you!) and I checked the coolant level and it was down about 2 litres. Had it pressure tested and it was fine, so they were saying it could be leaking into the engine somewhere and burning off. Is this bad for the engine?

I dont mind dropping a couple litres into the radiator every couple of months if its not going to hurt it too much 8)

I beleive I am having the exact same issue as far as mysterious coolant leak and the CEL code 25 for lean air-fuel ratio.

Anyone ever fix this issue themselves? Where should I start?

i had the same prob with mine turned out both head gaskets were leaking and the plenum gasket had a 2 inch sec that was blown out on the back side causing the trk to run way rough and also overheat after a few miles . did a complete top end rebuild had the heads machined trk runs great now . cheap repairs and well worth it . total was right around 300 . would do it again if i had to
:dancin:

$300 bucks for both headgaskets? I assume you did the job yourself?

I had it checked last night and sure enough its a head gasket. Toyota put a new block in it 4years/20k miles ago to. Can you believe that? These 3.0 head gaskets are a nightmare. But if I can get it done cheap I will do the fix. Swaping engines just is not cost effective for me at this point.

Maybe switch to headers next? That should help prolong the new gaskets.
