...and you could by 1984, tube it out on tons and drop in a supercharged LS1, but it still wouldn't be as nice.

If you dropped 20k into it could be pretty damn 'nice'.

I'm just pointing out a 4Runner came with a V8 already and its pretty cheap and makes easy power with a supercharger and headers. They are great trucks. Get a V8 GX470 if you want a nicer interior with the same motor. There is no need to want a V8 when you can have one.

As far as installation between the Magnuson & URD kit goes. The replacing of the fuel pump adds a decent amount of more install time. My biggest concern is the

Advanced engine management using UCON Flex self tuning engine management system

Does this require a Dyno Tune?

Or is this something that I just install inline with the PCM and it controls everything and tunes things on the fly?

You get a hell of a lot more stuff for your money with the URD kit, the only thing that would hold me back is the reliability of the UCON, if it's a pretty straight forward install and requires no Dyno tuning then I'm good as sold. If somebody could clarify that would be fantastic!

they come with a configuration file preinstalled from URD. can be upgraded in future through usb when they release a stage 2.

It tunes everything on the fly. No issues yet.
No tuning needed on our parts.

I just got done installing my kit last week. I had Toyota put in the new fuel pump and the crank pulley. It took me about 24 hours to install the other components by myself. If you’re cruising around town you barley notice the supercharger. I think my TRD CAI was louder when it was installed. Sounds like a jet engine though when you’re WOT.

hows your noise when idle? I guess i'm not use to this noise yet.

I mean you can definitely tell it’s there at idle but it’s not too crazy. If I’ve got the A/C is on, the noise is louder. I think the intercooler pump adds to the noise also. I’ve noticed that I have to keep my key turned on startup for an extra second for the motor to turn over. I was actually hoping for a little more supercharger whine but I’m definitely happy with the added power.

yes haha every time my garage pulls my car up, they sometimes fail to start my car for that reason..

definitely happy with this added power also.

So I’ve put about 4K miles on my 4Runner since installing the URD kit. No major issues. It does make a lot more noise when cold staring in really cold weather. Also, I’ve noticed that if I take off and go half throttle until I reach 60-70 mph, my 3rd or 4th gear will kind of hang up. In some cases I’ll have to shift manually. I’ve been told that I could need a zero gyro calibration. Anyone else experiencing any thing like this?

About 6k mi on my URD/Whipple kit. I had the performance shop change the SC oil at about the 5k mi mark. I know it wasn't required so early, but I'm of the mind to change oil on anything new and check for shavings. Shop said it was fine, but it did take them about 2.5 hours to do the job because they have to lift the SC up off the intake plenum to drain it. I attached the suggested service interval PDF from Whipple, 75-100k mi.
After they did the supercharger got quieter, no more "million dwarves beating hammers" sound at idle.
EDIT: After about 2 weeks, I noticed the coolant reservoir looked low, so I refilled it... several times! Apparently it was VERY low, and hence the proper amount of coolant was not being circulated through the intercooler and heat exchanger. Since refilling the million tiny dwarfs have returned.

I have noticed a little hunting for gear, especially holding onto 4th gear too long. It's mostly been in the mountains after the ECU downshifted to assist in braking or keep the cruise control from going over the desired speed. Since I'm on central OH, this really isn't much of a problem. I've also learned just to shift to N for long downhills of 6% grade or higher.

More updates?

Any more updates? Especially with the 4th gear issue? I am debating Magnuson versus URD and would love to hear more. My local shop is pushing Magnuson. I'm looking for a S/C to help me when driving on I-70 in Colorado up the mountains and keeping in 5th gear and doing +70MPH.

I heard the Magnuson tune was pretty lackluster also...

What shop are you using? I'm out in the mtns and don't have a shop but would like a S/C as well. Leaning towards the URD
