URD 7th Injector install

So my biggest fear when buying my 3rd gen has been realized. Engine ping!!

I listened for it on the test drive but not being familiar with the sound of a healthy 3.4L I couldn't hear it over the TRD exhaust. But now I'm certain it's there. Therefore it's now my problem to deal with.

Looks like the fix-all for this is the 7th injector. I searched for install threads and all I found was people asking for help after their home attempts to install had issues. Just glossed over the instruction manual and it looks pretty complicated and there seem to be many places where the experience required is beyond my skills, especially being new to Toyotas.

Not to mention tuning!!

Any success stories out there from people doing a driveway install?
Install threads I missed?
Has anyone paid for their install, and knows how many labor hours they paid for?

This is super frustrating knowing the SC was installed at the dealer day one, so the ping has been wearing the engine for 167k!:ybrick:

the URD 7th install is quite easy and straight forward actually.

where are you lost or need guidance at?

although i can say that i agree its a bit nerveracking when doing the wiring at the ECU as its a tight space and quite "important" wiring to mess around with, but after finishing, i can say it wasnt as bad as i thought.

Mechanical installation stuff I'm good with, new fuel pump, injector/vacuum lines etc.

I'm a little intimidated by making hard wire modifications to the ECU and most specifically the tuning. I know absolutely nothing about tuning fuel/air ratios.

Just take your time with the wires. Triple check your crimping the right wire and should be good. For tuning that I can't put my advice as I haven't completely finished mines. But that stock tune it comes with works pretty well.

As far as tuning goes I'm not looking for huge boost gains, at this point all I want is to get rid of the pingning.

What due you tune with? Is there a separate tuner to buy or do you somehow plug a laptop into the unit?

I saw on the SC info page here that getting the dynamic belt tensioner and Denso spark plugs can also help with pingning, but I'm not sure it's worth $300+ for a half ass band-aid fix or to shell out $900 and do it right with the injector kit.

I wasn't prepared when I bought it to turn around and throw a grand into it for at least a year! (thats when timing belt and water pump will be due).

Well yea if you wanna try and work on a small budget go ahead and put in the two step colder spark plugs. I doubt the dynamic tensioner is going to stop pinging or help any more then the static version. All it does is hold belt tension and the static is just as good, only difference is the static is manually set and the dynamic does the tensioning for you.

If you haven't run those spark plugs yet another thing I figure you already should know but ill mention anyway is that your running premium octane fuel. 92 octane is good.

The 7th should fix your pinging. I can't say for sure because I installed mines same time as my SC as I knew exactly what I wanted. But according to urd and other reviews it should help and most likely will fix your issues. Also look at it as not a fix but also an upgrade in a sense that with a better fuel system and correct spark plugs you'll be running more optimal air fuel ratios and probably gain some power from that. Also you'll be able to run a smaller pulley, the larger of the two urd sells and daily that and make 9lbs of boost instead of the stock 7lbs which will be another addition to power. So both the urd kit with the pulley will not only fix your issue but also result in upgrade of quite a bit of power. I haven t dyno'd mines so I can't say for sure and I also haven't run my SC without the upgrades so I can say how much but from what I read of others it's quite a bit of power more.

I have yet to drive a stock 4runnrr with a stock SC so till then all I can say is the power with the fuel upgrades and smaller pulley over NA stock is awesome. Mid range hauls ass and great response overall.

I was skeptical on doing the ecu wiring myself. have you ever installed car stereos? I've done a bunch, but the directions that gadget give you with the kit is pretty darn clear lol. its hard to screw it up. probably the easiest wiring instructions I've stumbled upon ever.

If you are worried about pinging and the 7th injector kit scares you, maybe just buy an oversized pulley (less boost) and get some 2-step colder spark plugs first, it may solve your issues.

I think a much cheaper option to curing your pinging would be to install a water/meth kit as opposed to the 7th injector. Either home-building your own kit, or buying from some of the name brands out there should cost way less. Only downside is you have to refill the water/meth. There's a guy on the YT who was supercharged, and he removed the URD 7th injector kit as he was getting better results from w/m.

Just a thought.

Yeah I've done plenty of stereo decks over the years. Was actually about to order a double din for the rig but I think that'll have to wait until I get this solved.

I'll have to look into the water/meth kit install. I just want to do it right the first time to get as much longevity out of this motor as possible. it's a shame it's been run this way since it hit the streets. All I can hope for is to fix this and pray there isn't too much wear on the engine already.

I would still like to have methanol injection in conjunction with my URD kit, but meth alone won't always take care of the pinging problem.

I'm sorry, I didn't explain that well. I live at sealevel and with just the TRD supercharger, it would ping. The URD kit did take care of that issue. I was just pointing out the reason I didn't go with methanol instead of the URD kit, because in my case, I would have had to start spraying meth at 0 psi.

So the instant you were out of vacuum and into boost, you would get pinging? Something definitely seems off.

That's what I thought too but a few degrees of timing retard took care of it. I don't have a boost gauge, so that was based on glancing over at the R4 software to see what boost cell it was in while driving .

Well I did the install yesterday. Everything went smoothly. Rig fired right back up. But I STILL HAVE ENGINE PING! :mad2: In fact it almost seems worse now. I'm assuming the install was correct because I can certainly feel the extra HP. Not sure if the 20 degree air outside could have an effect, I'd assume cold air would help prevent early detonation... When I was under the rig dropping the tank the fuel filter looks pretty old, maybe that's negating the upgraded pump...

I'm grasping at straws here. Guess I'll have to tune the module but I was really hoping the install alone would solve the pinging, since I know absolutely jack about tuning.

Any trouble shooting ideas out there? I'm running stock pulley, stock intake, TRD exhaust.
