URGENT! + Battery Cable / Starter Problem

+ Battery Cable / Starter Problem

This is my daily driver... and it's not starting now! :O Please help me out... you guys are the only resource I have right now.

Ok, so I just replaced my positive battery cable... the one going from the + battery post to the starter.

After I got the new cable in, and reconnected the smaller positive lead that goes to the fuse box, the truck isn't starting.

I get dome lights and all that, but when I turn the key over... all I hear is a **click...click....whhhiiirrrrrrrr***
I hear something making a faint whiring noise, the starter I guess, but it isnt turning the engine over. It's never had a problem starting before now.

What did I screw up?! Please help, I need to be able to drive to work tomorrow. Didn't expect this to become a problem. I'll even give you guys my phone number if need be.

BTW - that starter is HARD to get to!

Sounds like you battery might just be low.

The clicking is the solenoid trying to engage the starter. Put your headlioghts on and try starting, if they dim could very well be low battery. Jump start it and see if that helps.

thanks for the replies guys... i was getting worried there for a little while when it wouldnt start.

I started tracing wires again, and looking in my chilton, and figured out that there is a little wire with a connector on one end that is supposed to go on that starter. Cramming my face under the truck to look again, I saw that wire and it was disconnected! Plugged it back in (which took like 15 minutes due to the HORRIBLE location for the starter) and it cranked right up!

BUT...

The whole reason I did this project is cuz I noticed a big gash in my + battery cable, so big the cable was only barely holding together. Every time I turn my fans, lights, wipers, blinkers on my truck almost dies from not having enough juice... battery gauge dropps big time whenever I turn something on. Sometimes I cant get it to crank too, due to no power.

BRAND NEW BATTERY!! It did all this on the old battery too. So I figured it was all because that big gash in the cable was not allowing enough electricity to flow thru the battery, thus not charging it well, and not providing enough juice to the system.

But it's still doing it, after a new battery and new + battery cable.

What do you think could be causing all this? Alternator? Maybe I should take the truck into Schucks and have them do the free electrical systems test...

I had a similar problem and replaced battery, alternator. There was a red wire that goes to the alternator that had a hidden break. It 's been ahile but check the wires around the alternator.
