URGENT - Need bolt size for rear shock mount (1987)

Quickly: I need to know the bolt/nut size for the lower rear shock mount on the 1987 4Runner rear axle.

More: Upper mount of one shock came loose whilst wheeling; nut and washer gone. I removed the other shock to match the nut. Then I noticed the lower mount nuts don't match. Same inside size, but different outside. Since I was going to buy nuts anyway, made sense to match them up. For the lowers, I found a match at M12-1.25. Unfortunately, that size is loose on the bolt. Spins on fine, but has too much play. And yes, upon trial, the previously mounted nuts did the same. (The person that did this should be drawn and quartered!) I made a special trip into town to make this repair. My hunting buddies, my tent, all my gear, and my trailer are still on the backside of Mt. Lemmon. I need to finish this repair and get back to hunting camp.

Please someone help me right away!

Well, it seems the rear end is anything but stock. Tried calling Toyota for the nuts. They said the stock axle doesn't take a nut for mounting the shock, but a bolt instead.

The lower mount brackets were apparently welded onto the axle and include a fixed bolt, size 7/16-1.5. The upper mount bar is obviously custom and includes bolts, M14 with fine thread.

I found ratcheting tie-down straps just the ticket in compressing the shocks during mounting.

Yeah, there isn't much left for stock in regards to that rear axle.

Yep, definitely not stock. without being able to take an accurate sample with you, you might have to go to a hardware store and buy a whole handful of nuts that are close and hope for the best.

But the really important question is... how big is the coues buck?

The axle is stock, the suspension has been changed.

The bolt can't be 7/16-1.5, that's a standard US bolt size and a metric thread pitch.
It's probably 7/16-20 which is real close to the metric M12-1.5 .

You're right. I still had 1.5 stuck in my head from purchasing nuts that matched those that had been on it. The correctly fitting and now mounted nuts are 7/16-20. Thanks for the clarification.

The M12-1.5 is close enough that they were holding the shocks on the lower mounts for who knows how long. I only discovered the problem when attempting to snug the nut and push the shock the last bit onto the bolt...and the nut popped back a thread!
