URGH!~This is F'd Up - Car got painted today, well sort of. Advice?

SO I'm driving to work today and a flat bed roofing supply truck in front of me loses its load of multiple 5gallon silver sealant buckets (think white paint). Buckets dumped off the flat bed, smashed on the road and white paint stuff everywhere. No time or room to avoid, drove right through it. 4runner OK, but tread of tires = white, splatted into wheel wells... used to be black but now speckled white), black running boards splatted white spots. Hopefully the body and paint is avoided but can't tell until daylight cause was already getting dark and rainy/windy conditions.

The roofing company is owning the incident and said whatever it takes to fix they are paying for. They gave me some orange cleaner stuff that they say takes off the silver guard stuff but I am worried that anything that can eat asphalt sealant what that might do to my rig. I avoid car washes (wash it myself with care at home only) so didn't want to go that route or let them try to clean it at the roofing company (they also offered to do that). I tired to take of the stuff on the running boards with water and soap but no dice... just smears it like paint would.

ANy thoughts?

Agreed. Don’t take any ownership of the clean-up or you could be blamed for making it worse. Hand it off to your insurance company and insist on repairs being done by a top-notch shop who knows what chemicals are involved. In the end, you need to be satisfied with the results.

I'd ask for fender liners and running boards to be replaced, maybe even tires.

you can always hit the wheel wells with black bedliner. pretty sure there is some in there already. As for the rest, claim it... hell claim it all, but if the insurance company writes a check for new lines, bedliner and cash the rest.

But the tires are basically brand new too. and now have white paint on and between the treads. It will wear off eventually but in the meanwhile why should I have to look a white paint?

Was planning trip to detail shop tomorrow to see what they think. Perhaps have the roofing co pay for it to be detailed professionally and then see what's left. If the detail place can't get the paint off then ask for new stuff.

I called my insurance and they said would be OK to go direct through the roofing co as long as they are playing along but if there is a disagreement or problem then can always put claim in with my insurance and they will subrogate.

Best thing I have used to get paint like that off is lacquer thinner. Use one of those blue shop towels you get at Wal-Mart or a soft rag, soak a portion of the rag and lightly rub. Works good on clear coat but possible that it will remove some of the black single stage flat or semi-flat black paint so go slowly and don't press too hard. If you do rub some of the black paint off, use SEM Trim Black to re-paint it. Best stuff in a can you can buy. If you have a lot of paint it will be a lot of work to get it off. How easy or hard it is to get off is going to depend on what kind of paint it was as well. If it is highway paint that they put on roads it will be difficult but not impossible.

But yea, good idea if those are stock running boards to have the company give you the money to replace them and put on sliders instead.

I don't think it's out of line to have those items replaced. I am a firm believer that if something happens to my vehicle, it should be taken care of. If I were you, I wouldn't want things cleaned as it may never look the same again, I would want them replaced to be taken back to the condition the vehicle was in previously.

Hell the BMW dealer washed our 340i in their car wash after I requested no wash since all of our cars are hand washed and were just detailed for winter, they reimbursed me in full for the detail to have it done again.

JC, don't feel shitty at all... you're literally the victim here! This is exactly why people should learn to strap their shit down properly or not be in rush. This company should be very thankful it was only paint that damaged your vehicle and not something that could have cause you or others physical harm.

Do not feel bad, get your stuff restored to its original state prior to some dip shit ruining it.

I agree with others that suggested opening a claim and have them subrogate. That's what I would do.

Thanks for advice and support everyone (or everyone save one). Shit like this happens and tomorrow is a new day. I just had to come home and see my kids' faces to remind me what's really important. COuld have been much much worse so I am actually lucky.

Good idea to talk with the detail shop. If it’s a good shop they will have good advice. At the least, you’ll have a better idea of what you’re up against. More information is good. Really sorry you have to deal with this. I’ve seen concrete trucks lose buckets of gravel. Good luck!

Yeah, you feel bad for the company that f;d up, but they did F up, not you. Demanding for your truck to be the same as if it never happened isn't unreasonable, its perfectly reasonable.

Careful with detailers. They are great at waxing and polishing, but rarely have the expertise to remove solvents and paints. They clean great, but many of them are not educated in removal from my own experience.

Mission impossible. I noticed as the car dried in the garage tonight that there looks like bits of shiny metal stuck to the finish. In researching this stuff that spilled, its not just paint but as luck would have it, it is a white solvent mixed with fibered aluminum flakes designed to cure to a reflective finish on a roof and insulate the house.... even worse than paint because any attempt to remove those particles is going to be an abrasive situation for the clear coat at the very least to the extent this stuff made it past the fender or splash guards and splatted on the fenders and lower carriage of the rig. I see some spots of that as the car dried in the garage tonight. Fun. I absolutely will need someone with expertise in solvent/paint removal. Don't even know where to start looking for that.
