USA STD gears

Folks, trying to buy 4.56 Ring & pinions for my 87. Rock Auto seems to have some very competitive prices but the USA STD gears have the note: not for quiet running vehicles? Has anyone used these and are they that much loader than the OEM? Looking for recommendations if this isn't a good manufacturer and if Rock Auto is not the source for gears and bearings, thanks

Don't want to have to do the gear swap more than once. I have the detroit on my bench just need to get the install kit and R & P.

When Yukon has gear sets that come off the line just ever so slightly out of tolerance they box them up as USA Standard. They're just as strong, and I haven't noticed my set being any noisier than any other.

Nice, now its the overhaul kit, bearing choices Koyo or Timken, Japanese or American?

What is meant by 1 5/8" ring & Pinion? I'm assuming it a bearing size and I've read there is a SPH and LPH. Based on my year I should have a LPH but haven't found anything on the dimensions of the thin or thicker bearing. Any help would be appreciated. Nothing worse than starting the job only to find out you have the wrong parts.

My understanding, and you'll want to confirm this with whoever you decide to buy gears from, is that ALL aftermarket "4cyl" gears are short pinion head, and all "V6" gears are long pinion head.

I still have the 3rd member in the truck. I have my detroit locker and my install kit and it figurs the bearings for the detroit are to small. Anyone know what size the bearings should be? I've read the pinion bearings have different sizes but haven't read about differences on the locker?

Well, it seems the detroit may be for the V6 and has a larger ID bearing. Its too bad the suppliers don't post the bearing sizes.

As long as the backlash and pinion load was set correct you should be cool.

Did you end up using a crush sleeve or solid sleeve?

Couple years ago I ran a set of USA Standard gears in my GMC race truck and that was the worst decision I've ever made. Within a week they were HOWLING and making all kinds of horrible noises... took it back to my installer and he verified that everything was installed correctly, but it appeared that the gears weren't hardened like they should've been and they basically ate themselves alive. Had the same installer swap in a set of gears of a different brand (don't recall what brand they were now) and they never made a sound! Glad to see you went with Richmond...

I have a set of 8" toyota 5:29 gears USA STD in the back of my 4Runner and a set of 7.5" toyota ifs 5:29s USA STD gears in the front and they haven't made a sound at all.

5:29 gears are supposed to be whiny too.

My truck is used for trail driving and daily 2 mile commute. Not a whole lot of stress on them, but still quiet none the less.

I had a Yukon gear set in the rear for awhile and it exploded on me driving down the road. I half blame it on the install since it was the first time I had done one.

On a whole, I am very satisfied with the USA sets I have.

Mine were in a 600hp truck that I daily drove, and drove HARD. I think it was just a fluke deal on that one set of gears. I know they can't ALL be like that.

Thanks for the feedback on the setup. I was hoping to have it back together until I checked out the axle bearings. Time to make a bearing R & R tool.

crush sleeve

It takes a good size breaker bar to crush the sleeve to the correct preload.

Well I ordered the axle bearings and have the tool designed nailed down. Figured I might as well check out the new locker and gears in the mean time. I ran it fora while on the jack stands and then the road. No noticeable sounds or vibrations from the rear and the locker is hooking up. Is there a break in period for new gears??
So far so good and now for the front. Air locker/ trutrac or?? Suggestions?
