Use Fox adjuster nut (collar) on King Coilovers? (Thread pitch)

So I crossed threaded my spring adjuster nut on my King coilovers (the part you turn with spanner wrench to raise/lower coilovers).

I’m wondering if the Fox ones would work? They are cheaper, more available and seem to be an easier setup than the Kings.

I guess the only thing stopping it from working is if the thread pitches are different. Anyone know?

Knowing what a finicky process adjusting both fox and king is... I would not even think about not running the brand specific collars. I just can't figure out why they use a pinch collar design that has so much room for user error.

I have some kings going on soon. Dreading the adjustment process of having to uninstall for each adjustment... PITA to deal with. I think they say you can adjust the non-resi ones on the truck, but all types of warnings about the pinch collar bolt tension.

^ Same I would just pay the extra and buy a King for a King and a Fox for a Fox.

That said when I pull mine to rebuild them I would like to get the dual locking collar instead of the single and a taller+heavier spring to lessen the preload. I had my single collar tension bolt too loose when I was adjusting them on installed, Skipped a bunch of threads and scared the sh!t out of me, no damage but f'k. It was a PITA to adjust installed, I think I could have removed them adjusted and reinstalled in the same amount of time as it took to adjust on the truck.

So I suppose if you were just about to get some Fox 2.5 DSC's that you would go ahead and get a dual locking collar right out of the gate?

Off road shop is tackling this for me on Monday. They’ll bring to a machine shop if need be.

Here’s a tip when adjusting the Kings. DO NOT back the “pinch bolt” off very much. That was my error. I slacked it off to much and rotated the collar. Being to “open” it skipped threads on me and cross threaded.

It was my fault but that being said they need a better system. The PIA to adjust these things for what you pay is crazy. Being ocd like me they get adjusted more than you think. Originally had them at the height I wanted but the coils break in and it sags. Re-adjust. Add amour...re-adjust..more sag...re-adjust

Not to mention the collar is made out of aluminum, the holes stretch and warp after multiple adjustments. The straight bar supplied by King used to adjust broke already.

Rant over.

buy some cheap harbor freight punches that will just fit in the adjustment holes...i found that those work better than any ajustment wrench made, and won't "egg" out the adjustment holes too much. I use two of them for leverage. Just a little bit of advice when dealing with coilovers.

Great advice. Happen to know size or have link so I can order online?

I was going to have Accutune Off-road add the double locking collars when he swapped my springs but he said it wouldn't make a difference in adjusting the shock. The old collars suck too and you really should use a spring compressor to adjust, especially if you have heavier than the 600lb springs.

Yea, from what I can tell fox and king are simply not really made to be adjusted on the truck. It sucks big time that you really should remove them and compress the spring (almost defeats the purpose of it being adjustable). If you mention this in many of the threads on coil over brand choices... you will just get the "you don't know what you are doing" comments.

Another reason I like ICONs... They are made to adjust on the truck. Even with 700lb springs and remote resi... but I still fell for it and got talked into giving Kings a try for my LT. Sure hope they are worth the trouble... hopefully won't have to adjust too many times.

The icons use a single thick collar with lots of holes and a set screw against the threads (which I don't think is even needed really) The tension will always hold the collar in place is my guess.

If it makes anyone feel any better. I see constant posts from local guys with busted collars on Fox, King... trying to adjust. It's a very common problem to have the pinch bolt at the wrong tension. I have not tried yet myself, but my Kings came with instructions that state not to adjust on the truck because of the remote resi being in the way... I plan to install soon. Just have another project to finish up first. I will not attempt to adjust on the truck.

I thought Toytec stopped using a dual collar on the Boss coilovers because they sometimes would corrode together. Could be wrong on that.

Good point, interesting because they are not dissimilar materials. You think they would simply add a $1 nylon washer the same size as the top pinch collar.

I feel the pain. i also loosened my fox coilover collar too much on my titan and it cross threaded as well. I used to run SAWs, they just used a set screw, i could adjust those all day and never have an issue. A machine shop could make you one out of stainless and use set screws that tighten against the threads of the shock body (like SAW/Icon)

someone needs to design a ratchet strap setup that is short and strong enough to use on the coils while mounted to the truck. just enough to take the tension off the collar to make adjustments.

friends don't let friends adjust kings/fox's while mounted to the truck:redbrick::redbrick: i rocked one side Fox one side Bilstein/oem spring for a week or two when i messed mine up:guitar3::guitar3:

AND just sell different height/weight spring congfigurations (there is a King shop in CO that will swap springs for free until you get what you like) you only have to minimally adjust ON truck.

IIRC if you're local to King, i know you're not, they will adjust and work with you on valving/rebuilds.

Filthy Motorsports seems pretty sweet, Ben's super helpful.
