Used 2014 vs New 2016

My understanding is that the differences would be in the Entune Audio Plus department. And the 2016 has a midnight metallic exterior color choice.
Is it worth it? I thinks has more to do with your philosophy of buying new vs used and your budget. For me personally, for "only" 3K extra I would go new. But I might value it differently than you would.

Compared to the overall cost, YES....IMO. Plus there are many other variables with the condition of the preowned one. If the condition is less than excellent then you need to ask yourself if it's worth it. With new, it's usually easier to get exactly what you want in terms of trim level and color as well.
But to me, when spending that kind of money, knowing I'm the only owner who ever touched it or know who touched it and took care of it is invaluable.

I'd take a new one for a $4k difference. No miles, no warranty transferral to worry about, no wondering if there is some secret problem that you don't know about, plenty of peace of mind from my perspective. Not to mention, you will almost certainly get a better interest rate buying brand new (assuming you don't have $40k sitting in a shoe box). Either way; enjoy! I don't think either way is wrong. These things retain their value for a reason.

I am also in the market of purchasing a 4Runner, Still debating if I should take a 2016 or wait till 2017. After looking at used cars prices it was a no brainer to choose new vs used. It insane what some owners are asking for a 1-2 year old car with 10-20k miles on them.
That's cause they get their asking price. Resale prices for our vehicles is cray-cray. I am with you though, spend a few $k more so you don't inherit someone else problems. You never know how they treated their cars befor selling them.

If you are referring to Toyota 4Runners when you made the "insane" statement, you can look at it 2 ways.
You know that these are great vehicles and hold their values and when it comes time to sell yours, you will know it is worth every penny you are asking for it and someone will gladly purchase it.
Now on your first statement about purchasing a 4Runner, if you are trading a vehicle in on it, your value of your trade vehicle will never be any higher than it was today and the 4Runner you are wanting to buy, if you do your homework will never be any cheaper....so, go make a deal!

I went new man, was able to get my Trail Premium (no KDSS) for $37k. While I was at the dealership I was on Cars.com and was finding used ones at dealers and private parties in the area with 35k miles for only $3,500 less. That is silly, $1,000 per 10k miles not taking warranty in to account makes new an easy decision.

If you're paying cash that's the only time I would consider buying used in this scenario.
Most time the interest rate difference when financing between new and slightly used eats up the perceived cost savings over the course of the loan.
for instance your monthly payment will be more on the used vehicle than the new vehicle (all other things being equal) because used car loan rates are higher...

Please explain how a seller on ebay wants 49k for a BONE STOCK 2016 4Runner with 406 miles (registered 1 owner not a demo). I called him and asked what makes this vehicle almost 6k over msrp ( Toyota MSRP $42,500 without any accessories) does it have a TRD SUPERCHARGER? his response "well they are very limited production and it's rare BLAH BLAH BLAH" I can order a brand new one at the dealer for MSRP without negotiating and have it in less than 10 weeks. There were a few instances where a buyer for a used TRD is asking well above msrp. Yes 4Runner keeps its value, but some sellers think it is gold plated and with time/mileage on a vehicle some how it magically increases the price. With the current used market prices for a 4Runner I will only consider brand new.

If I were to buy that vehicle, my offer at most would of been 38k, I am pretty sure I can get a TRD brand new for about 41k without haggling too much. I got a Toyota dealer down 3k on a Trail Premium with kdss without even trying at all, just called and asked if they would price match another dealer.

I bought new... If the gap in price would have been larger I would have went used, like I normally do. I got to chose the EXACT color and options I wanted, which is worth a lot to me!

There is this guy in my town, had the same silver 2010 to 2013 Trail. Would wave if I saw him, never stopped to talk. Then I saw a desert color TRD Pro in front of his house. Now I see a Chevy Volt or something. The rest of his family has various nice pickup trucks, so I can't be sure who has what.
So maybe he sold the TRD Pro for $$$.
And no I am not stalking him, his house is just south of the ice skating rink we take our daughter to.

Based on resale value alone, you'd have to be crazy to buy a used 4runner that's less than 2 years old in my little corner of the USofA. I bought my 2016 SR5 for only $2000 more than the best-price offer for any 2014+ used SR5 within 100 miles of me, and all of the used ones were former rental cars.
The other thing to consider is that if you buy a 2 year old 4runner, and save couple thousand bucks, you could theoretically finance it for a shorter term, but think about it this way:
You finance a used 2014 for 4 years, at a higher rate, and when it's paid off you have a 6 year old vehicle that lost its virginity to someone else. Or, you finance a new 2016 for 5 years, with comparable payments to the used one because of the longer term and lower interest rate, and you only have a 5 year old vehicle when it's paid off, and it has always been yours. It's a no-brainer to me.

I have a theory that may be somewhat outdated (but not entirely) when it comes to completely new models:
My theory is that best of any given generation is the last model year. By the end of the run, they have (hopefully) worked out all the bugs and nuances and you should have a pretty rock solid vehicle.
I know Toyota has a very good vetting process on new models. Their quality model demands it. However... Until you get thousands of vehicles out there with thousands of different drivers it's impossible to find all the kinks.
So, that being said and from (bad experience - not from Toyota) I would never buy a first year model. Then again I don't gamble when I go to Vegas.
