Used 2014 vs New 2016

I have a theory that may be somewhat outdated (but not entirely) when it comes to completely new models:

My theory is that best of any given generation is the last model year. By the end of the run, they have (hopefully) worked out all the bugs and nuances and you should have a pretty rock solid vehicle.

I know Toyota has a very good vetting process on new models. Their quality model demands it. However... Until you get thousands of vehicles out there with thousands of different drivers it's impossible to find all the kinks.

So, that being said and from (bad experience - not from Toyota) I would never buy a first year model. Then again I don't gamble when I go to Vegas.

I 100% agree with you, But I don't want to get outdated within the first year that I am going to have the car. I can also benefit from 3.5 v6 with 6 speed auto a lot better gas mileage.

Sometimes newer isn't better until it's vetted.

Chrysler is having nothing but issues with their 8 speed auto and I have heard the Toyota 6 speed autos have had (a lesser but fair share) of their own issues.

I would strongly second this. How far it applies will vary from model to model but some other advantageous are more aftermarket parts, DIY's etc. My 4runner was well aged in its product lifecycle (2014) and while I don't think the 5th gen 4runner was that impacted by the changes (from a reliability viewpoint) I do think my wife's Audi S4 was which is why we bought a B8.5 at the end of the life cycle after the B9 was already announced. The only downside is you are trading a known model history for a "dated" platform. Its a model year 2015 but was designed back in 2009 or so.

I bought knew, your milage may vary but there is a strong argument in the 4runner market that as a whole, buying new makes sense unless you can find a steal used or are terrible at negotiations and want to pay MSRP at a dealer.

I get it, I'm not too worried as I will have warranty and I also like to extend my warranties. I hate owning a car without warranty honestly. My previous Lexus had platinum extended warrant for 7yr/100k miles. After it expired I got rid of it. I seen some 2017 pictures ( or so claimed pictures) and I liked that body a lot more then the current.

If these pictures are real I WANT IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I went through the same thing 2 years ago when we bought ours. I still can't believe how much people are willing to pay for used 4Runners! We were undecided on the styling of 14 vs 13, but the 14 has grown on us and we like it better than the 13's now.

The price is what made our mind up. I have a pretty low opinion of people in general, so I have a hard time trusting that some brain dead "distracted" moron didn't drive the wheels off of it bouncing off of every curb, slamming every huge pothole, and hitting every piece of debris in the road while never bothering to get the oil changed. $3500 is cheap insurance and peace of mind in that department. If it had been $10k difference for a low mileage 1-2 year old truck, I might take the gamble. But not for $3 to $4k.

Also, we were comparing a TEP to an SR5P (wife didn't like the hood scoop, she's such a nerd! Who doesn't think fake scoops are cool?) Anyway, the TEP was only $1000 more, so that's the one we got.

Actually KDSS was the major selling point for me over the other models.

And you know what? Every single person that see's my 4Runner has said they love the hood scoop. It sets it apart. Same thing for my 2002 T4R Sport.

I've had a muscle car with a functional hood scoop before and you know what I was doing every time I got caught in rain? Getting wet stuffing the hood scoop with the foam sock to keep the engine from sucking in 20 gallons of water.

depends on the mileage. Id take the CPO if the mileage wasn't outrageous and put the $3500 into mods. sometime the CPO coverage is better than what you get buying new

He was right, Hood scoop functions as an engine cooler hence adding 50 horsepower at 7,000 rpm. It is very important to keep the engine cool at that rpm to gain magical horsepower. When it rains, a clear magical shield is formed keeping it nice and dry. Also it adds 7 points to your manly hood. Where do I sign?

I'm looking to buy a 4Runner and am trying to decide between a used 2015-2016 or new 2017. I want the SR5P with a sunroof they are terribly hard to find in my area (Bellingham, WA) and surrounding areas. When they are for sale, they're asking nearly what I can get a new 2017 for, roughly around 36K. These things are like gold around here. I'm not excited about paying more but for the peace of mind, its looking like a no brainer. Some dealers in the northwest are asking for more then 36K for a used 2015 and 2016. Thanks all for your help

You really should start expanding your search and looking into having your car shipped or finding a way to get to the dealership and driving it home.

I've been watching the used sites for approximately a month, all these 4runners are insanely overpriced on craigslist, etc. The thing is, the same models are still for sale a month later, don't think I've seen a single sale of any of them. Resale value only applies when cars sell, and these 4runners and not selling, even the TEP's are sitting there not selling.

My 2 cents.

As other mention, factor in the interest rate on a new/used car loan. Also more miles mean you are closer to replacing brakes, battery, tires, fluids, timing chain/belt, water pumps etc.

One of the inspections I do when buying used is I look closely to see if a receiver has been put in the receiver hitch. I pass on 4Runners that someone towed with. I also pass if I see the skid plates has scrapes. Most used 4Runners have never been off-road nor towed anything. Those are the ones I consider.
