Used 4 Runner question

I am in the market for a used SUV - a "real" SUV with ground clearance, true 4 x 4, etc. I have a chance to purchase a 2004 4 Runner V8 with 160 000 km (one owner, all service records) for just under $15 000 taxes in.

I am also considering other vehicles such as the Nissan Xterra and Jeep Liberty. For the same money, I can get a slightly newer (2006 - 2008) version of those vehicles.

I know 4Runners have an awesome reputation for durability/reliability - is it worth buying a vehicle that is a few years older?

I want this vehicle to deliver 5 years/100 000 km of reasonably reliable service.

My opinion is that the 4th Gen could use about 3 more inches of ground clearance but otherwise an outstanding vehicle overall.

I've had my 2005 V8 for a bit over a year now and never once regretted my decision to purchase it.

Ensure the timing belt/ water pump service was completed and if not, you have some negotiating power to get that price down.

Do any of those have a solid front axle instead of the silly IFS?

I would agree that the only thing holding the 4runner back as a stock vehicle is ground clearance, specifically the 4th gen. This is most easily / inexpensively fixed with a spacer lift or, especially for a high mileage vehicle in need of new shocks, a full suspension lift. The full suspension lift can be done for relatively cheaply / easily as well, even more so with the popularity of installing FJ Cruiser components. As to the rest of your requirements, the 4runner almost speaks for itself. The model year Xterra's you are looking at have a known issue with their timing chain guide runners, most dealers will replace worn ones but read the xterra/frontier forums and gauge for yourself how Nissan is handling the problem if you are seriously considering this vehicle. The Liberty almost certainly does not meet your definition of a "real" SUV with ground clearance, true 4 x 4, etc...the only two Jeep products that, in IMHO qualify are the Jeep Wrangler (especially the Rubicon edition) and the Jeep Commander. The Wrangler is uncomfortable and LOUD on the road, especially on the highway, and it is easily broken into with the soft top. The Commander is more streetable but I found it overprice and its interior poorly executed and cramped...headroom was decent though. In the end though, I hope you see that a full time 4wd, body on frame, V8, true low range lockable transfer case, son-of-land-cruiser reliability is probably not a bad way to spend your money. Please though, read up on the issues a lot of people have with used (actually, under used vehicles..read:T-case actuator) before you decide. Oh, and the V6 T4R aint no slouch either!! Best of luck.
