I have done alot of research, and was pretty confident I wanted the V8, but wanted to drive them both for myself to be sure. That was the only reason I went in there. I had a feeling he was full of S***, but just wanted to make sure with all of you that my gut was right, it just didn't sound quite right. You have more than confirmed my thoughts on this.
I am still looking, I called on that one in ME and found out it has not had the timing belt changed and sits at 117k. So if the timing belt wasn't done at 90k like it should have been, what else hasn't been done?
I found another one I am interested in Southern MA. '06 V8 Limited
What are your thoughts? still a bit high in price I think, but as it is coming to the time that the timing belt needs to be changed, I think I might be able to have some wiggle room if I go in with 'cash' in hand!

1- No the wish oh meter reads 23-24mpg. Again this is when I am hyper mileing on long highway trips. Driving around town I get 18-19 and it read 20-21 on the wish o meter. I can easy change that with some exuberant driving.
2- Nope its a common issue with the V8s. Here is a whole thread on it and TBS.

So I guess he wasn't as full of it as I thought. Sounds like it could be coverered under warentee though. Either way it is good info to go into it with, I now have one more step to add to my test drive...put it in reverse, foot on the brake and listen.

I have a 2003 v8. This vehicle is by far the best I have owned. My wife and I daily drive as well as weekend trail ride. It has taken all the abuse of a guy who believes in using his vehicles. Gas milage isn't great but who cares around 18 is what I get on average. It has 132,000 and I have never touched anything besides the brakes. I do pull alot of trailers through the hills in East Tn. The upside is they also hold their value. Just buy it and have a blast!

I have a small bass boat that I will be towing around, but I could do that with almost anything that had some ground clearance and 4WD (Some of the launch ramps around me leave ALOT to be disired). I pretty stuck on the V8.
Gonna stop by the bank on my way home and get pre-approved so when I find something I can JUMP!

Looks like pricing point for the age is right on with the 3rd gen's;I paid $13.5k for my '99 (with Loadwarrior rack,new +1 tires,two sets of OEM floormats) in late '04 with 95k miles.
It now has 167k and runs great and zero leaks and is getting ready for another off road trip this weekend which is why i love Toyotas.

Bottom line is you are not going make a bad decision with either engine, both are strong and efficient engines for their displacement. As you say jump at the best deal and when you drive by that used car salesman that blew smoke, hang your wrist out the window and salute. I hate non informed sales people.

That TSB does not state that the exhaust manifolds are cracked and that is what is causing the issue. In fact... I'll have to dig a lil deeper because that TSB does not provide ANY reason for the issue... But it is a TSB that can be used to repair a cracked manifold, if the vehicle is still under warranty and you can convince them the smell is there.
As I said, down here where I'm at we're not seeing a lot of these come through so I wonder if it is climate/zone related. Also, from the picture in the thread, you may be able to TIG weld the flange back on from the inside and then smooth it a bit so that the flange will fit properly.

Dude I got mine in MA. It was $6,000 less then anything in NH or ME. And if you want to drive a V8 just come drive mine!

I am dealing with a dealership in MA that has said if I have time (which I do) they will take all the info as to what I am looking for and it will be on their "to get" list when they go to auctions.
I might take you up on that 'test drive' one of these days!

Instead of going through the dealer on a "to find" list try to find a smaller wholesaler or smaller dealer with an auction license and have them ind one for you. That way you can buy at wholesale price and then just throw the dealer 500-1000 bucks. That's what I ended up doing and got exactly what I wanted, only drawback is it will almost definitely be an "as is" sale. You have to know what to look for and what you are willing to give in this process. The ability to save 4k is beautiful on your wallet and leaves funds to mod with or perform maintenance. The dealer is goin to look at the same auction but then turn around an charge you retail and make the 4-5k you are looking to save.
Either way if you have your heart set on a specific vehicle you are gonna have to hurry up and wait through the purchase process but hopefully in the end it's all worth it.

Agreed. Car Salespersons are a joke. Last thursday I picked up a Certified Pre-Owned 05 Silver 4th Gen SE V8 with 60k miles in mint condition for $18k.
My sales "cheerleader" was blonde, blue-eyed, 5'3, mini-skirt, with Double D's. Made the transaction very pleasant, however, it still didnt change the numbers in my mind. It was nice to have her point out the cleanliness of the underside of her...i mean...the vehicle, but in the end she had no idea about what the center diff lock button actually did, nor could she explain what "XREAS" was.
I was lucky enough to have a good chunk of equity in my trade and I got the trade amount I wanted, so I walked out with $0 additional down, 2.9% on a Certified Pre-Owned for 60mos. My monthly payment went up $5 and my insurance went up $0.30.

Keep in mind that if you do go with a high milage v8, you will soon need to dump some coin into a new timing belt and water pump and some other small odds and ends.
I used that information to my advantage and talk the lady down $800 for my 04 SR5 4x4 v8 w/90k, bringing the grand total to $14,200. Obviously the vehicles condition will affect the price. Mine is in mint condition. Hope that helps!!
