Used vs new

Any insight ? Been searching for a few months for a trail edition 11-15 year and there is hardly a spread between buying used vs new. I'm about to resign and buy new because it's hard to stomach only saving 2-4K to,purchase a 4R that still has anywhere from 30-40k miles vs new. Has anyone seen if there is more wiggle room that I'm not seeing on the used market? Good thing is I'll feel great about the pricing power toyotas command when selling ha. Thanks for any info.

New: depreciation, higher taxes (typ. not always), should require less maint., "virgin" appeal, MORE expensive.

Used: already depreciated a bit, more bargain room, unknown maint. history (sometimes not the case), you can find a smoking deal.

This question depends on your stomach and your wallet. Can you stomach throwing away a couple G's right off the lot? Yes, its a toyota, but its also used now, sorry I have to be the one to break it to you. Can your wallet handle the extra strain of a new vehicle that cost more up front?

there are smoking used deals out there, better than just the 2-4k lower you are speaking of (often you need to be willing to go and get the great deal, possibly in the couple hundred miles range depending on where you are), and good new deals. we arent going to make this decision for you.

Also why have you ruled out the 2010? Its a great year too and still a 5th gen. Just asking.

I've been looking at 4Runners for a few months now... I (personally) came to the same conclusion I did years ago while looking for a Tundra. I'd rather spend a few thousand extra to have a new one. I typically keep my vehicles for 5-10 years though. If I traded them more frequently, I'd buy used so as not to lose as much via depreciation.

I want a 2014-2016 4Runner TE to replace my Rubicon. It's next to impossible to find a used 2014/2015 TE around here. When I do, is always only about a $3000 savings from new and has 25k-50k miles.

For the money difference, I'm going to choose new....

What if I said that I purchased a pre-loved 4Runner with 5k miles for $8k lower than what it would cost me new? It depends how you deal and who you deal with. Saving $2k on a 30k mile vehicle is not worth it, but you have to decide the max miles you want and how much you want to save.

That is an awesome deal! Unfortunately depending on where you live and what the supply vs demand is like a deal like that may not be available. Or like you mention you may need to take a road trip or fly and drive (done that before). In my area a used 2015 with 17-50k miles sell for ~$2k (some at just $1k some at $4k) less than a new one. I'd rather pay the extra $3k and get brand spankin new. At least I can be the one to break it in the way I like it and whatnot.

Funny story when I wanted a Tacoma DCOF I could by a 1 yr old one with 15k miles or a brand new for just a $1k more. The dealer wouldn't budge on the price of the used. But the new on they came down $4k. You never know what you may find out there. Just always shop around and take your time. There's always a deal to be had!

They are out there. We were looking all day at and fell into a 2015 limited with 13K miles in my small town. It was crazy because we have been looking for a while and there are very little T4R's available in my area. We checked this dealer on a whim and when we showed up there was a woman cleaning her stuff out of this beautiful blue limited. It turns out she bought it this time last year and decided she wanted something smaller. Needless to say we had our paperwork done on it about a half an hour after she finished hers. 38K certified with a 100,000 mile power train warrantee for free. Again they are out there just keep looking.

I typically purchase new, keep my vehicles for 10 years with the exception of my 1996 T100, it is 20 years old this month.

When looking for a new 4Runner, I did come across some used ones, but believe it or not, here in Louisiana 4WD vehicles of this type are more of the exception than the norm. So looking for my specific requirements, a TP, silver or gray, I was basically forced to purchase new.

Add to the fact that used 4Runners command a high price, I went new, glad I did.

I can see myself keeping this vehicle for a very long time, it is not my daily driver, three months old, 2100 miles.

my 3 cents...shop until you cant stomach it anymore for a used deal...use all of the searches you can find, and then...IF you cant find exactly what you want, go new.

i was in the same boat a yr ago. Searching for 4Rnrs and GXs at every turn. at work, when the boss wasnt looking, at home, causing the woman that i am related to by marriage to comment at my psychosis. I looked and looked. I didnt want to drop 40-large, but was willing if i had to. 4th gens, 1st-5th gens and 2nd-5th gens...all were similarly priced, with varying mileage.

In the end, i ended up on two 5th gens, both 2012s with mileage in the 50s and 60s, and I was prepped to go test drive and buy whichever made me the best deal. And then the heavens opened, the angels sang, and what appeared on my computer screen; a 2014 SR5 w/ 20K miles on the clocks and just enough to tempt me, for the same $$ as either of the 2012s. After some back and forth with the dealer online and over the phone, and a visit the day before i was suppose to see both 2012s, BOOM, i had myself a 2014 to call my own.

Buying a car isnt easy, not when you know what you want. but if you take a few days/weeks and treat it like heroin-stay addicted to it day and night, im sure you'll find what you want.

and IF you dont, then you know that option of buying NEW is there...and usually is a much easier search, relatively speaking.

I actually just purchased a brand new trail with kdss without ever seeing one or even knowing a lot about the vehicles capabilities and options, I wanted to do new but the price difference did not make sense. Do these cars really hold that much resale value? I really wanted a limited to be honest but I was given a great deal on my trade so it made a lot of sense to get this one seeing they did not have other 4runners. The price was just under 40k and for a few grand more I could have had a limited but the salesman said that the trails will hold better value since they are limited production compared to other models. Is this true? I absolutely love it and will likely only add running boards and a few exterior goodies. Any input would greatly be appreciated. Thanks and I'm happy to be here.

I bought a 2011 trail used earlier this year. I think it had 60k miles. Paid $26.5k. The car was well maintained with all maintenance done at the local toyota dealership. It has kdss. The exterior has no dents or dings. a few very minor scratches, perferct wheels and new tires. I was looking at around $38-39k for a new trail premium w/kdss. After trade in of my 08 t4r I am paying $256 a month for 60 month on my used vehicle. I was looking at $420 for 72 mos on the new vehicle. I would have loved to go new, but I am very happy w/my 11 trail and the smaller payment.
Used trails are hard to find, but if you look for awhile you will find one.

Trails I believe are somewhat more difficult to find, I have had sales people try to tell me this before. Not sure if this was just because I was looking for one. The Limited models more than hold there value.
The trail is more for those who want to go offroad. The Limited is more for the soccer moms or those who want more comfort creatures.

I bought new because I wanted a 5th gen and there were very few around here used. The ones that were around were barely cheaper, despite being several years old and having tens of thousands of kilometers.

The resale value is crazy, which is good and bad.

Combined with being able to get a better finance rate new, with the colours/options I wanted, a full warranty, and that new car smell - new made the most sense for me.

I'm in the same situation that you are. I'm in the market for a 4runner and after doing some research, I've found that the one I want is the Trail Premium. TEP's are non-existent on the lots around here, because they are already sold before they hit the ground at the dealership, so I can't even test drive one. The closest I've come is a SR5 Premium. With the way 4runners hold their value, I've decided to just get a new one. I'd be a fool to buy used and save only 2-3k for a vehicle with 20-30k miles already on it.

Bought a loaded 2011 trail with kdss, nav, etc with 35,000 miles and its Toyota CPO for $28k about 2 months ago. If i could have gotten a new one for 2k more I would have done it but everywhere i looked the new ones start at $36,000 minimum.

OP, I bought a 2011 4runner trail (non-KDSS) with ~ 30k miles for about $27k (pre taxes).

Yes, you can find used 4runner trails for a good discount....the key is looking in the right places and at the right time.

If you simply want the peace of mind from buying a truck new, no problem with that....just don't fool yourself into thinking that there is very little $ difference between buying new and buying used....that's not the case at all.

Now this is a good deal and a no brainer to buy used in this situation
