Using 4wd in reverse not possible???

I was reading reviews on some car buying site and one person had a complaint that the 4wd does not work in reverse and that it grinds when turning. His dealer according to him said this was normal. Is this guy nuts, or is this true?

Its because they are turning and probably not on a slippery surface so binding up the 4wd system.... happens going forwards too

Operator error nothing wrong with the truck IMHO

4WD in reverse

That's absurd. The vehicle would be useless as an off road truck if reverse didn't work as well as forward. You'd be stuck anywhere you had to back up in 4WD.

If they're turning on pavement that is dry then the wheels will bind because the turning radius is different for every wheel. The drive train in 4WD does not provide slip between wheels (except for the front axles - IFS - which do not lock) and shouldn't be driven on dry pavement.

That is a strange comment. 4wd works just fine in reverse.... BUT (there is always one of those...)

It's not a great idea to use reverse when forward gears are an option. For instance, don't try to do a recovery in reverse... The reason relates to the ring and pinion gears and how they are cut. They can be weaker on the coast side.... which is what is taking the load in reverse. Another reason is the front end takes much more load in reverse and the front diff and CV axles are much weaker than the solid rear...

Bottom line, reverse works fine in 4wd. Just don't use it the same way you use forward gears.... If you have the option.. Do all your heavy pulling and spinning... in forward gears.

This.

I found this out the hard way by asking a knowledgable tech a stupid question. It definitely is different than it was in my prior trucks.
