did you try searching for this info? theres many, many, threads on this exact topic, it gets covered like once a week. use either google or the search bar here and i know you'll find plenty of information

[MENTION=115854]yzeevy[/MENTION], welcome to our forum! So, I am assuming that you have NOT yet purchased your 4Runner, but that you are looking at a 4th gen (2003-2009), correct? OK, to answer your question, in a nutshell, the V8 has about 20 more horsepower and gets about 2mpg less than the V6. Towing capacity for the V8 is greater (I think about an extra 2000 lbs.?) but you have to change out the timing belt at 90k miles whereas the V6 has a timing chain and thus does not have to be changed out until about 200k miles. Performance on both the V6 and V8 is almost identical with the V8 having a VERY slight edge on acceleration I have the V6 and I love it. HOWEVER, if I could do it all over again, I would have purchased the V8 for the extra towing capacity.

Regardless, feel free to let us know what you are looking at and we'll help you make a good/smart choice! Also, you should take a look at some of the 4Runners in our classifieds section as you will find some that have been meticulously cared for and already modded with suspension, armor and other awesome goodies! Yes I did searched, no, not to much. My post is just a bait for the info I'm after.

So, in the near few months I intend to retire, set me up with a nice reliable automobile and tour Central / South America - SOLO, yes all by myself.

Since health seams to be OK, my only limit is financial hwell:

I have no intentions climbing mountains or hopping boulders but I definitely want 4X4 with a minimal lift and some off road stuff. I saw some of the pics of wnelax04sr5 and that's the level of roads I have in mind. (can I stay please?)

I also consider the TACOMA w. extended cub. In that case I'll build my own pop up camper. Any bought camper is too heavy, too much unnecessary stuff, way over priced and I need V8.

Any advise, ideas will be appreciated!

V8 all day. And get a 4runner. I was between a 4R and a Tacoma as well. I went with the 4R. Reason being, ultimately the 4R has more cargo space than the Tacoma and I need a covered cargo area to put my dog.

V8 vs V6 I have to say V8. Difference in gas mileage is negligible and I'd rather have the versatility of a V8. V8 has a bit of a smoother ride than the V6 in my experience.

Ive had both, just traded in my 07 FJ I've had for 8 years for a 06 GX470 with low miles. The FJ with lift/metal bumper/sliders/285s/other mods was down to 12 mpg. The GX is right now just with lift at 15.2 average. I will be putting on 285s today and will document where I'm at, but stock the MPG drop is definitely negligible and the V8 has a lot more torque and oomph!

Welcome... see below search links for just a few.
I had both and only had both because that's what they came with when purchased not because I sought out either one. I would still own either... if you tow a larger boat, ect then V8, otherwise flip a coin. MPG was always a couple mpg less with the V8. For driving and refinement, the V8 was definitely nicer, quieter and more fun to drive. But I wouldn't knock either that I owned. The V6 was great as well. Have fun in your search!

i didn't think i was harsh at all. i was a member here for almost 5 months before i posted, i just searched constantly. i didn't unwelcome him, but it'll save him from the not so nice members who will be much less nice than others

as far as the trails I've done, my lift has been just enough to make it comfortable riding. any less and it would be stressful, anymore suspension, either in travel length, height, or valving and compression, and it would be very easy.

wnelax04sr5 - I checked your My Build but I don't understand the technical side of lifting. Can you tell me please, basically how much you lifted your 4Runner??

And the 2 new questions . . .

1. If you are stuck behind a slow moving truck / bus for several hours you wish you had V6 or V8. Its very realistic in S. America.

2. Since I intend to throw out all the back seats, it is possible to install a captain chair or adding a swivel on the passenger side ? ! ?
