V6 and V8 Engine Noise

Quiet operation? Both the V6 & V8 are pretty quiet when I am on the trail in a National Forest. I rented a V6 to make sure that the 4Runner was a good choice for me. However, I bought the V8.
What surprises me is how many truck folks make their rigs nosier by changing, or removing, the muffler. If I could easily modify my exhaust, I would make mine even quieter.

I just do not understand why some people find the smallest thing to complain about a vehicle. If you have driven Hondas and Toyotas and Lexus your entire life I guess you might say it is loud. Drive any other truck or suv and then drive a V-6 4Runner. 9 times out of 10 the 4Runner will be quiter.
I never owned a Toyota until I got my Runner. Besides my 95 Honda Civic EX it is the Quitest Vehicle I have owned. Just to give a perspective my last 2 vehicles were a 00 Dodge Neon and a 96 Dodge 1500 w/360 V-8 Dual exhaust, CAI, and many more performance mods. Also owned a 95 Chevy Blazer, 98 Cavailer, Wife owned a Geo metro When I meet her, 93 Hyundai Excel, 82 Ford Escort.

Not all of us were given Good cars as teenagers. My first car was the 82 escort at 18 years old in 1992. $1100. It was a POS but It was a car. It makes me sick to see the cars Kids are given today to drive. I know a 18 year old girl that has totaled 2 Tahoes (00 and 02) The last one she totaled she hit a Train, A TRAIN!!!!. Broke both of her legs. What does Rich Ass stupid Daddy do???? He buys her a Brand new 05 Sequoia 4x4 limited after she gets out of the hospital ( a month later). The Girl has never worked a day in her life and she is driving a $40k+ Vehicle. I know all of you know somebody that is like that with their kids.

I have much better things to worry about in life than how loud a quite vehicle is. I have worked for everything I have ever gotten in my life and it makes me so mad to see the petty things people complain about.
Go Drive a Jeep, Ford, or Chevy SUV for a year and then come back and drive the Toyota. You will never complain again.

People do complain about the littlest things and as far as parents buying their kids whatever, that's never gonna stop, a friend of mine bought his son an F-150 Lightning and the kid totalled it, so he bought him an R1, kid hit a telephone pole doing 100+ and he's killed himself obviously
I don't want to get too far off-topic, but I just want to make clear that I'm not complaining about my V6 4Runner. It was an honest question from someone who has never owned a truck before. This is my first Toyota and I'm quite happy with it, which is why I'm planning on installing a carputer and projector HIDs come summer when I'll have the time to do it. Oh and I go to school full-time and work two part-time jobs in order to support me and my 4Runner.
Ok, now where were we? Oh yeah, how the f*** do I install dampening materials in the engine bay to quite down my V6 in order to make it sound like a V8??!?!

Get the weatherproof stereo sound absorbing material and place it against the steel under the hood and where possible along the steel engine bay sides. Then replace the factory sound absorbing material under the hood.
VW makes their diesel engine compartments quiet by adding heat resistant soft foam to the underside of the pretty plastic engine cover, and closes off the entire underside of the engine bay.
So, you might add sound absorbing material to the V6 plastic cover too.

My post was not directed at any one person. Just generally Venting I guess in a public forum.
The Sound issue just struck a nerve last night and maybe a few to many:beer: .
I did not mean to imply that the thread starter was a teenager or had a free ride through life. It just seems like the people that do the most complaining about anything have had everything handed to them. I have a 21 year old brother in-law like this. He thinks the world owes him a life.
Anyway, I did not intend for the post to be a personal attack on anyone. I am sorry if anyone took it that way.
As far as the dynamat. I would be concerned weather it will hold up to the heat of the engine compartment. I would do alot of research before you stick anything in there. Good luck on your quest for peace and quiet.......

I've been looking at the installations at the http://www.b-quiet.com/ site, and am quite impressed. Seems that there has been quite a bit of IQ applied to this issue.
If I recall right, Lexus pioneered sound dampening in cars by introducing the application of butyl between two layers of steel. Inexpensive and yet very effective.

That was one of the reasons I choose to buy the V8. It's also why I won't be putting any aftermarket exhaust system on it.
I love the hushed quiet from the engine while cruising at 80 MPH.
I'd bet your wallet isn't too "HUSHED" when you refill the gas tank after that "Quiet" engine goes 80 mph! We all know what 80 mph does to the 4Runner's mpgs!

Why did you dig up a 4 year thread that has such little value?
Cool pic, but there is no free lunch. You may deaden the sound a bit (why?), but you also add a ton of weight all up front. No thx.
My '03 V8 is seriously smooth and quiet. I absolutely adore this engine.
