V6 Consumption

If you read the window sticker, the 21 figure is the average MPG found during testing on the highway. The actual MPG they saw during testing varied between 17 and 25....
I just got back from an all Highway trip 550 miles round trip with 2 passengers averaging around 72-73 MPH with the AC at 72, all on one tank of gas! Filled up this morning on the way to work, took 20.2 gallons, doing the math, it puts the highway mileage around 27.2 MPG (calculated) - and mine is a 4WD SR5 V6.
EDIT: I noted that the average was 72-73 MPH, but only 400 miles were pure interstate highway at 72-73 MPH. the remaining 150 were at 45-50 MPH on state routes and intrastate highways. So overall average would be around 63 mph

alright Koz, you caught me...
I did have an empty pinball cabinet (freshly painted) on the way to NY plus the 2 passengers. On the way back, just 1 passenger and no pinball cabinet.

Wow, I don't know how you guys are getting over 500 miles on a tank of gas. The most I've ever had was about 420 miles on a full tank of premium and the range displayed 4 miles "to empty", although we know that its really 4 miles to the remaining 2 gallon in reserve. Since I put in 21 gallons and its a 23 gallon tank, it makes sense. On my recent 1800 mile road trip, the best mpg I got on a tank of gas was 21.54mpg and that was going about 65-70mph with the AC on @ 71 degrees the entire time. Worst was 19.51mpg. BTW, mine's a 4wd V6 in 2wd mode.

Usually I get around 450 per tank, but that was highway speeds of 75 mph with a mix of 50% highway and 50% city. This was the only all-Highway trip I have taken in 12000 miles.
On a side note, the range output on the computer for me is surprisingly accurate (within 5-10 miles), and after getting averages for the last 8000 miles, the MPG readout is also getting closer to being accurate (only off by 3% now). I can reliably predict when the yellow light will go off within 5-10 miles.
edit: I have only used premium twice. I have used regular for all fill ups since April of this year.

from listening to all you v6 owners rant and rave, i definitely went with the wrong engine. it seems that the v6 offers twice the gas mileage, the same amount of power, and a lower depreciation, since they are cheaper to buy and have a higher resale value (gas prices being what they are).
the best option is that you can disengage the full time 4wd, saving on unnecessary fuel consumption.
if the v6 i test drove hadn't been such a dog, i would be living the high life too!

I wouldn't go so far as to say the same amount of power... The V6 is weaker, but not substantially. If gas prices go down, the depreciation should be the same for V8 and V6. There are strengths to both engines.... Better fuel economy is one of the V6's strengths.
The sad thing for all SUV's is that gas is radpidly approaching (and almost guaranteed to hit) $100 per barrel, especially with Katrina doing her worst down south.

Hey Gonzo....want to trade, I have a 2005 SE ,V6. (only kidding). I think I bought the wrong engine...the V8 gives you a lot of flexiblity,torque,towing power and umpf. Yea ,it costs a little more to run but not that much. If I had it to do over it would be the 8. Not that the 6 is bad but for the occasional tow it would be great. I have to rent a truck now to pull a car and trailer which I don't do often but just didn't consider when I got the 6. I think you got the right rig. My 2c worth.

Hmm... I wonder if it is worth it for me to trade in my V6 for a V8 since there are big discounts for them now due to rising gas prices and lower demand. I bought the V6 thinking that TRD was gonna make a supercharger for it since it was rumored to be available for the X-Runner. Doesn't look like it's gonna happen, that blows! Had the VVT-i V8 been out when I got my 4R, I would've bought it. I used to drive alot (50k+ miles a year), but not anymore. 
I like all the new (mechanical) features of the '06 4R, but not the round & more pronounced fender flares, bulkier rear bumper, black roof rack/runningboard/center bumper trim, and new front fascia (except for the projector headlights). Don't get me wrong, I love my current V6, but I just wish that TRD made a supercharger for it. The VVT-i V8 is the closest substitution.

You can say it again. I want a supercharger for my V6 too. It's will be one of the best mods...

Every time I read these gas mileage threads I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. News stories abound about vast numbers of car buyers upset 'cause their vehicles don't get the EPA sticker estimates, yet around here we seem to have lots of people getting better. I don't think anyone's lying. I just have to get used to the fact that I can make no sense of it and enjoy the rest of.....The....Outer....Limits....

It all depends on how you drive. My '04 V6 averaged the same gas mileage that I'm getting on my '05 V8, and my guess is that the reason is because the V8 doesn't have to work nearly as hard to move the 4Runner. I'm still happy I went with the V8, but these gas prices are insane.
