V6 Gas Mileage...

Just got our 4runner- haven't read book but do you reset the mileage very time you gas up? i see the range but wasn't sure how it works?

I have a 2008 SR5 V6 and I am getting about 18-19 city and around 22-24 on the highway and that is driving around 70 mph.

Range will reset itself but I believe the MPG feature has to be reset by you. Hold down the button for a few seconds and MPG or your average speed will individually reset.

My average is 14 mpg. Sounds like crap compared to everyone else on this forum...you and I both...thats approximately 310 mi. Per tank.(500 km) .when light comes on

If you're pushing a lot of stop-and-go or in-town driving, especially if you've got to stop at the bottom of hills or anything else that has you applying the brakes a lot I could see how you'd get 14 MPG. Around town here my wife doesn't do much better than that.

Well talk about a resurrected thread! I'm all for it if it can solve our MPG problems!

JCD: I also get around 310 per tank, display shows about 315/320 when it used to show 410+. Slightly taller 265/70 tires shouldn't be the blame... not winter gas either as this has been the case the whole year...

No kidding! I was surprised when I saw the email that there was a post here.

Anyway, my gas mileage seems to have leveled off - was much better in the summer and worse in the winter (probably a combination of 4WD and winter fuel). The best I got in the summer was around 21 with almost all highway driving. I would say we average between 17.5 and 20 depending on summer vs. winter and who is driving (my wife has a heavier foot than I do). Not as good as I remember in my previous 2006 4Runner, but I'm sure there are a number of factors that can impact this. We don't drive it that much, but when we fill it up, we definitely feel it in the wallet! (our other two cars get over 30 miles per gallon and have smaller tanks, so it's really noticeable when we fill up the 4Runner).

I'll check the next time I fill up and then post the results on this thread. I usually leave it on Average MPG's and just reset it each time I fill. I rarely move it to display the range. The Average MPG's on the display is almost always 2 MPG's higher than my actual MPG's (which I always calculate manually).

We average about 22mpg mixed driving since we bought it in August. But, I'm pretty gentle on the gas pedal in the 4Runner

I get 18-19mpg with mixed driving while going up and down hills around my house. Regular highway driving I get around 22-23mpg. Only performance mod I have installed is a Magnaflow Cat-Back exhaust. It increased my mpg by around 1.

New member here, with a V6. I performed:

1. MAF cleaning
2. Seafoam job
3. HCF Delete
4. New Plugs

I have been rewarded for my efforts by a 2 MPG increase by hand calc.

Right now i average about 19mpg. Going to Stevens PAss one time averaged around 23mpg! So it varies on how i am driving so i want to say anywhere between 19-23mpg

I hand calculate my mileage every time I fill up and yesterday I got 18.2, which is about 1 mpg less than I normally see. I attribute this to a 170 mile drive I did from Vermont back to home in NH where I was averaging around 80 mph with spurts as high as 90 here and there depending on visibility. That type of speed really puts a hurt on fuel efficiency, but when you want to get home you want to get home.

I've posted this before but I did notice about a 1 mpg reduction in efficiency when I put my Revo 2's on as replacements for the Dueler H/T's that were on it when I got it. They're always inflated to 32 psi but they've got a more aggressive tread pattern and they probably weigh more, hence the reduction.

I'm skeptical of anyone who claims 24 mpg by hand calculations, however. Factory estimates for this vehicle were 16/20 so to see 24 would be quite the feat.

Did the same as SR5 Iron (except step 3) and gain some about 1-2 mpg (from 15 - 16mpg to 17-18mpg). But I'm still trying to achieve 20+ mpg and I'm just waiting to check my brakes for any frozen capiler and hopefully will increase my MPG.

Its really easy, just remove your airfilter, look up stream. See that grey mesh filter looking thing, thats your hydrocarbon filter.

It serves no purpose then to restict air flow and keep the folks in california happy.

It is held there by 6 plastic welded studs. The studs break off really easily, I used a small screw driver to get one corner popped and the rest came really easy.

If I could burn one tank cruising 65 MPH on a level road I could hit that 24 MPG mark but that would be about the limit of what could be done at any reasonable speed. Of interest I managed about 24 MPG on a trip from Fresno to Yosemite and back as per my ScangaugeII which matches the pump usually to within .1 gal at fillup. The key here was that speeds were slow enough that aerodynamic drag was less of a factor but speeds were high enough that I could keep 4th or 5th gear nearly all of the trip. Results for that tank were 505 miles on 21.767 gallons or 23.2 MPG.

If driving is restricted to in town a few miles at a time then 16-17 MPG is normal. Mixed driving gets us about 20 MPG and for the 10,500 miles over 14 months we've had the car we've averaged 19.9 MPG.

Hey EOD thank you for your service first off & secondly thx for posting this. Congrats on your truck! This proves that there are V6 4th gens out there that actually run right! 505 on a full tank? OMG that's like 200 miles more than what I normally get! I'll admit though the most I used to see on the range display was like 415-420, whether I actually drove that distance IDK, I didn't keep track back then but for those doubters out there who keep saying it's a truck-live with it or what did you expect, it's old; now YOU SEE!
The OP is getting the marketed MPG & then some! 2007 brochure states 17/21 city/hwy for 4x4 V6, you got 23!

questions questions questions...
1.Any mods on your truck?
2.Type of gas you use, ethanol free?
3.Does the SG2 read live voltage?
4.I know you purchased used so you don't know the maintenance prior to your ownership but what kind of PMCS have you done?

My wife eats too much (gas), help me fall back in <3 with her!

To the responders who posted their MPG's, did you manually calculate this as the OP did or via the computer. This makes a big difference in my opinion - manual is more reliable. Also, +1 on mods (performance, bigger tires, etc.) and regular maintenance affecting MPG.

I personally think anywhere between 18-21 MPG highway (calculated manually, not reading from the computer) on a completely stock 4runner is pretty normal.
