V6 or V8

Prefer the V6 or V8 and why?

V8, it's got more power down low. I get up to freeway speeds without going above 2200 rpm. I wish we had the timing chain, though.
 
Neither. someone will take the time to stuff Toyota's 5.7 V8 in the 4runner some day. That is what I'd like to see.
 
V6 because I have the same engine in my Tacoma and it's been very reliable (105k on the Tacoma and I bought it with 12 miles on it), and I couldn't find a V8 4x4 while I was looking.

you cant find a v8 because no one wants to sell one, they like them that much. while i dont have a 4runner with a v8 i have a lexus GX 470 with the 4.7l v8 and i love it! its awesome, smooth and broad power. very reliable and low maint. i have 140k on mine and have not yet changed the timming belt(due at 90k -yes i know i should) but i have heard of them going 200k easily. again the belt is not what fails, something else fails causing the belt to snap, like the water pump. anyhow i just put new plugs in it, taking the old original plugs out and they looked fine, but it runs a lot smoother and the MPG are back. easily gets 20mpg on the hwy
 
V8 because I like how smooth the 4.7 is, and the sound.

I'm extremely happy with my V6, it's like a Veyron compared to my 3rd gen V6 so it's plenty fast for me. I don't tow, I use it as a highway-cruising DD as well as a ski/mountain rig, and average about 20mpg, but can easily get more on long trips (not bad for a 4x4). Of course I would like a V8 a lot, my parents have one of the 4.7's in their Tundra and it's a fantastic motor, but in an IDEAL world I'd have neither. I'd rather have a turbo diesel.
 
Just bought an 04 V8 SR5 last week. Wanted it for towing and for me, having the V8 is reminiscent of my younger days.
 
V8!! Can't say enough about it, this motor rocks!! I love messing with people that think my truck is a slow, lumbering beast! :guitar3:
 
For my type of use and driving the V6 and 2wd was the best choice.
I understand many have real needs for the V8 and 4wd,and the extra weight of all the items is ok.
So far I am very happy with my choice.
 
i didnt vote only because i wouldve been more than satisfied w either engine- i bought used and found a steal on a V8 sport and its an amazing engine...smooth quiet and plenty of power to get out in traffic and up to speed w/o breaking a sweat...if that same truck had the 6 i wouldve bought it w/o hesitation

this whole debate has been raging on this board for awhile and i understand why...and there is legit reasons to need the 4.7 but if the V8 was never offered we all would be very happy w a 240hp aluminum V6 (seems to be more liked than the new 270hp v6) look what past 'runners were putting out
 
I would like to know just how many forum members who own a 4runner in 4wd and V8 or V6. How often do you need the 4wd?

I read many threads where when needing repair, those 4wd 4runners really cost a lot of money to get fixed.

Also there is a lot of extra weight involved with any 4wd.
 
I live in CO, so comes in quite handy in the winter. I also love to explore the national forest, so yeah it's come in quite handy then as well. If I lived in a more neutral climate and in a flat area I wouldn't have made it a priority.
 
Both! I would have bought a v8 4runner but the nicest one I found when shopping happened to be a v6. I do love the v8 in our tundra! Both have proven to be great motors.

Living in Minnesota, our 4runner is practically in 4wd all winter...

My V8 is always in 4WD - it is full time 4wd after all.

I live in the snow belt here in Boston, so 4wd is very useful. I also run snow tires in the winter. And for two weeks each summer I take it on the beach on Martha's Vineyard. As I've stated in other threads, I don't see the point of a 2WD 4Runner. If you don't need the off-road performance of a body-on-frame, solid-rear-axle truck, most any unibody crossover will drive better, handle better, ride better, and get better fuel economy.

But if you do need the off-road performance of the 4Runner, it is one of the better choices for a midsize SUV.
