V6 or V8

Prefer the V6 or V8 and why?

We tow or boat regularly and for that reason went for the v8. Love the awd on slippery ramps, and would have been over tow limit loaded down in v6. I'm thinking around 5500-6000 wet. V8 power is great, we get 17-18 mpg so that's fine. Where I looking for all about power I would probably try for supercharging a v6.

The v6 has plenty of power, fast and capable and its great on the gas.

There have been plenty of threads on fuel economy here and they typically result in the conclusion that the V6 only gets couple mpg better than the V8. Suggesting that the V8 is a "gas guzzler" and the V6 is "great on gas" is simply fallacious.

Well when the v8 gets close to 400 mile to the tank then we will talk until then its a gas guzzler in my book

Hey,
Just let the guy be happy with his v6. Im sure he reads a lot of threads about the v6 getting 25mpg.

I get 16-18 with a slight lift and a/t tires. Sure it can be better, but I have not yet to complain about it. I think its pretty good for a suv. My acurs tls get 20 with premium gas.:/

No one is bashing the v6, I'm certainly not. Seems like some of the v6 guys are bashing the v8's all because the money they are saving on gas :violin:
What is also the main focus, is the v6 is more appealing for people that dont plan to tow. I dont tow much either, besides loading it with camping gear, kayak gear, and dirt bikes. I dont do it very often but when I do its nice to have a bit extra power.

However, I bet I can still do all that in a minivan or Subaru Forrester and get 25-30mpg.

So if your reason for not wanting a v8 is mpg there are plenty of better gas savers then a t4r v6.

In all honesty I dont even mind having a v6, although I would side towards the v8. Its only because the v8 was a better price when I was shopping for it. 7,400 bucks for a v8 with 130k miles at the time. V6's with same conditions were going for 10-12k. If I keep this truck for 10 years the gas mileage I would lose to owning a v6 would never add up to the 3k I saved.

yeah the MPG argument is kinda a mute issue if you as me. how you drive will have a bigger affect then the v8 vs v6. i get can easily get 20mpg with my GX(and it weighs more than your 4runners). and my old boss had a v6 that would get about the same. timing belts are not as bad as people say. both the 3.4l and the 4.7l have been known to go well past twice the recommended service intervals with no belt failures. the belts are not what fails, its always something else like a water pump that seizes and then damages the belt. and timing chains can break too, its just not often when they do.

Like I said mr butt hurt when your V8 gets 400 to the tank lets talk. Believing what the white slip on the window says is like believing everything on the internet is true.

My truck is beat to shit and back daily with 220,000 miles on it constantly sitting at idle up to 12 hours a day, along with hitting speeds well over a 100 constantly and very hard uturns and braking and still pulling 370 to 400 a tank I'm happy with the AC on mind you. No v8 is going to make that milage with that kind of driving unless it has a bigger tank on it. Sure Dude!
 
To get this back on track if you tow a lot v8 would take preference. otherwise whichever you find at a better deal they are both great vehicles
 
If we were comparing the OLD V6 with the V8, then I'd go with the V8... but the new 5th gen V6 comes too damn close to it.
 
V8 due to the fact that I make fun of my friends with Jeeps with their V6.

well actuall i cant have an option since this is the only 4Runner I have owned.
 
I have owned both. I prefer the V6. I do not tow. I honestly don't notice a big difference in performance. I did notice a difference in fuel economy. I think the V6 is perfectly capable for use as a daily driver. Both are good performers. I have found both to be reliable good rides.
 
I chose the the V8 because it was next in my line of progression. I've had an 86 4 cyl, 97 6 cyl and now the 07 sport 8 cyl. I love this 4runner so much I'm selling my old audi a4 and using it as my dd. I love the power of the V8 when I'm towing my UTV. It has 89k on it now, I will be keeping her well past 200k.
 
This is an easy question, V8 all the way.....Early 03-04 models have 4 speeds with the V6 so who wants that, the V8 comes with full-time 4WD so no need to worry on that....320 lbs of torque at 3400 rpm is much more fun that 235 lbs of torque at 4800...Also the 4.7 was Toyota's first V8 truck engine that is used in the expensive Lexus LX470, so I bet has pumped up the reliability and refinement..
 
V8 :clap2: I don't tow, get 18-19 average with an even mix of highway and city. It's all about the power. I live in CO, definitely nice not having to floor it to get through the mountain passes.
 
V6 or V8


It's the same as owning a Boat.

You never here, "I wish I would have gotten the smaller engine..."
