V6 switch to v-8....worth it opinions?

Actually a 4th gen for a 4.5 gen

for 5k? sounds Ok b/c if you look at the price difference between 4th gen and 4.5 gen 4runners the difference in asking price is about 5k with comparable mileage.....

I figured that was coming!

Interior and exterior are MINT. Has a third row too which I think might be useful with more kiddos camping in a few years.
I plan to swap my roof rack from the 04 and eventually add a OME lift with 285s. I got 19mpg all the way home at 75mph. The 4.7 engine feels very smooth and refined.

Did you actually get 19 mpg or did the computer say you did? My computer is a liar.

AGREE with the above comment. my computer is usually off by 1.5-2.0 mpg. (computer says 19..its means I'm actually getting 17-17.5). I just use my trip odometer and calculate the average after each fill up.

It was full when I left the dealer. Hand calc was 18.9, computer was 20.1. My v-6 was the same way.

Gents,

I'm looking at trading my 04 v6 4x4 SR5 with 168k miles for a 06 v8 4wd with 96k miles. Timing belt has not been done. To upgrade to the v8 is going cost me
5k plus a timing belt. Is the added lower mileage and added towing ability worth it to you guys?

My v6 with 33s and a roof rack is a dog above 65mph...it's even worse with a 3k lb trailer. Would a v8 4Runner solve my problems? Or should j look at like a newer used tundra....which would cost ALOT more. help:/

Frankly, the 33's are the problem. Even with a V8 you should regear when you jump to 33's. Which is why I'll stay with 32's max (well, 31.6", 265/65/18).

There's little benefit IMO jumping to 33's. You get a paltry, inconsequential .5" extra ground clearance over a 32.

Already bought the v-8. 285s LOOK great and have more ground clearance. Why did you buy 32s over 31s? That's only an extra 1/2 ground clearance.....

Yea, I guess I'm wondering how much 'better' the v8 will be with 32s or 33s, a 2-3" lift and a 3-4K load. Will it be a dog? Does anyone tow with this kinda setup with the v-8?
Pictures? Thoughts?
i see that you indeed got it. but you will notice a significant difference. especially once you go larger tires and add some weight.

Well I can say that my current build is not exactly speedy; I think my 0-60mph time is closer to 10 seconds than the factory 7.7~8-ish that was advertised. But she gets up and goes with the heavy 35's and armor pretty well, the V8 doesn't seem to mind. It's still fairly peppy despite being weighed down by the mods and still running stock gears. I can punch it if I need to on the freeway to pass people and it towed about 2000~2500lbs on the way up to Bend, OR from the Bay Area without issue.

The difference in low-end torque, gearing, and the additional gear in the transmission is more noticeable as you start loading the vehicle up with mods. I'd say stock for stock V6 vs. V8 is a tough choice as both are plenty powerful and have their minor benefits and detractors. But when you start seriously modding up your vehicle, you'll find the V8 can take a lot more weight and abuse without feeling like you need to sink the pedal to actually move down the road. But I'm sure if you regeared the V6 you might see some of the pep come back, it's all about low-end torque when you start modding this bad boys as you're gonna want the power on tap to move that extra weight (I'm sure my 4Runner is around 5k loaded at the moment with everything, I should get it weighed for shits and giggles...)
im curious as to what it actually weighs.
I expect you will be over 5k. aren't they around 4400 all stock? that weight stacks up FAST. surprisingly fast. 600lbs would be nothing...

Lol won't stay that way for long once you throw the 285s on there. I'm running 275/70 ko2s and I'm lucky if I get 16-17mpg on the hwy. In the city it's been mostly 11.5 lately

Yea, I'm not worried about gas mileage. I have a WRX for when I need to travel a long distance without too much gear.

Be prepared to change manifolds eventually. Unless you don't mind ticking. Also make sure you check that 4lo 4hi switch and cent diff lock. But for a truck that's always in 4wd it drives like a RWD car, love it. Coming from 3rd gen 3.4 it was night and day

On a side note, I'm turning about 1,800 RPM at 70mph in the 4Runner on the road; just to give you an idea what a somewhat loaded down 4th gen with 35's can do. :)

Oh I know, I read all about the header cracks. I'll go with Doug Thorley eventually...

My modified v8 4runner comes in at 5250 if I can remember loaded up with camping gear. Numbers gonna be coming up when my steel bumper gets here too

I'm looking to purchase another 4th gen and I'm torn between going with another V6 or going with the V8. A friend of mine is selling his '06 V8 with 130K miles on it. Timing belt and water pump were replaced at 90K. My biggest concern would be the manifolds. I've seen varying numbers on this site for how long they may last. Is there a good way to inspect the condition prior to purchase? What causes them to crack over time?
