A great thank-you to PhilC64 at the Blue FJC forum. I just did this 'valve isolation' trick and it made a real difference! :bigok:

You're attempting to isolate the vibrations from the VSV or Vacuum Switching Valve for the vapor purge system off of the fuel tank.

EDIT: Overtime a couple of people have replied back to me that for them this mod did little or nothing. A few here and at the FJC forum have said it helps. The good news is that the mod is quick and 'free'. If it doesn't do anything for you there's nothing lost.


The 1st pic is for general orientation. The only things you need are: A couple of o-rings, some double-sided sticky foam tape and a dab of the weak threadlock adhesive. I used a dab of silicone sealant.:bash:

Next is the valve removed and the tape & o-rings being installed.

Update: The weather has been great here today and I ran all day with the windows down. It's definately quiter. It's no V8 but it's noticeably better...

I will have to get some o-rings and give it a try. I have had my windows down all summer unless I have some passengers that can not stand the heat.. What did we ever do before A/C.. I nver use it unless its well into the 90's or raining.. And yes the weather has been great over here on the east coast.

Took a look at this valve today. Is it a concern on all V6's? The only thing I noticed was the usual valvetrain noise similar on both sides of the engine. How loud is this valve and is it consistent if it is a problem?

I think most of the 4.0L's are subject to some noise from the VSV valve. In looking at other boards some 3.4L guys talk about the noise too.

I noticed the noise reduction most while idling in gear and under light acceleration.

OFF TOPIC: I noticed a CounterAct rust protection in your sig. Did you do any posts on that? Have a link? Does it seem to help? Thanks.

I am not too concerned. The tape doesn't need to be 'tape' as it's pinched in place. If the heat affected the glue it wouldn't matter. As far as the tape itself is concerned: The tape is on the valve and the plastic intake manifold. It's so far away from the exhaust manifold or any portion of the metal engine that I can't imagine a scenario where you couldn't hold your hand on it, even the hottest summer day in traffic with a trailer.

Well your hearing is one possibility (least likely), another is your T4R doesn't do it (most likely) or possibly I'm enjoying a "placebo" high and mine is no different:lmao: I'm pretty sure it did help on mine though

Because it did really help mine the question becomes should I take mine in to the dealer and make my pitch for a new VSV, hmmmm

I added a link to the install thread in the sticky "DIY Mod" thread at the start of the General Discussion forum. I had some pics of the simple install and there is debate over it's value. I'm not expecting much, we'll see.

did this today, immediately noticed the difference and love it. Still not as quiet as the v8 but definitely not as loud as it used to be!

FYI, I used 1/4" o-rings. Walked into the new home-depot (opening days suck! and the parking lot is so small, it's ridiculous!) and they had so many different sizes. Since nobody mentioned it, thought I would to help others.

I also only found 2 contact points for the tape. One is the little square above the bolt, easily noticeable and the other is the left side of it on the back where it curves. Put one tiny square on there and a small strip on the curved part, works perfectly!

Also, I put on 2 o-rings, one for each contact point (either side of the valve)
