V8 4th Gen Question!!

Hi,
I have owned a gen 3 4runner for 3.5 years and now looking at getting into a V8 4runner. Below is one I am thinking of looking at today... what do y'all think? I was sent a few pictures of the underside, and the rear axle has some rust on there, not horrible, buts it would need attention.

looks nice, the price is a bit high though. I dont know about the rust but with toyotas history rust is always a problem. I do like the v8 in them though!

not sure if most would agree, but most 4runners today seemed overpriced. im trying to accept this... the majority of 4runner I see are easily priced in 20's, with miles around 40-65K, limited or not... so at this point I am trying to find the one with least amount of rust, that seems well taken care of.

According to the carfax, it's a one-owner vehicle with no accidents. Also, it has the leather upgrade and a moonroof (not sure if the moonroof was standard on the SR5 at the time) which is nice. You could run the VIN on Toyota.com to see if they had the major services done at a Toyota dealer. Since it is at a Toyota dealer, you could try to negotiate in a timing belt/water pump (timing belt due at 90K). If it’s the way you want, passes the test drive, and the rust is just mild surface rust, make an offer. Dealers have huge margins on used vehicles. I may be partial since I have a v8, but they are becoming harder and harder to come by with relatively low mileage, and that v8 is an excellent engine.

No, moon roofs were not "standard" on SR5's.

A clean V8 4x4 with 81k on the clock for $16k? I'd buy it at that price. As someone else stated, 4th gen V8 4x4's with under 100k miles are getting harder and harder to find. I say "DO IT"!

The rear axle housing on these and the front lower radiator support seem to be 2 of the more rust prone areas. Definitely check the front radiator support. The rear axle may just need a wire wheel and some fresh paint

I searched high and low for a Limited/V8/AWD in good shape back in March. I ended up finding one in another state with 59K miles for 22K. It has every option except rear air suspension and rear DVD which was perfect since I didn't want either one.
If you can find a good condition V8 at a fair price I would jump on it. You made a statement that the 4R is over-priced. Another way to look at it is that they simply hold value along with supply and demand. If the value isn't in a vehicle it's usually because it's a POS.

Actually, I think that it was Jembrmstr that said the price was "high", not the OP. I know, I know.... I'm splitting the hairs on a mouse's ass.

Just bought a 2005 V8 SR5 with 95k on it (last week).
No sunroof (which I preferred) and I need to do the timing belt....but managed a great price from the Toyota dealer in Memphis. $12k out the door!

Good luck with your purchase!

They're most likely for features not offered in the US. They are very handy for mounting aftermarket add ons like fuse boxes etc. On the flipside, they allow a ton of dirt into the engine bay as soon as you get off the pavement so some folks have plugged them to help keep the engine bay cleaner.

I want to say they're m6 or m8 thread size.

That's what I'm finding with mine. Very minor surface rust spots on the weld seams and then plenty on the two spots you listed. One of these days I'm gonna get under there with a wire brush and some spray paint.

Oh and my SR5 has a sunroof.

Decent price for the mileage. I would have paid an extra 1000-1500 or so for less miles, but I feel like I got a good deal. Careful of the rust on the suspension bolts, pivots, etc. A good pressure wash and under coat should help, especially with the aesthetics.

I was looking for a v8 4x4 in my area, but like your experience, everything I looked at was over priced or had a ton of miles. I've been looking for about 6 months, but just couldn't find anything for a good price, good condition, and low miles. I started to look at what my needs really were. 4x4 was more of a nice to have for me, as I am not into off roading. I really wanted 4x4 though, so it was with a little sadness that I started to broaden my search to 2wd models as well. My main purpose for this 4runner is to pull a boat, and haul all my scuba gear/spearfishing gear.

Long story short, I came across a 2004 Sport package v8 w/JBL, roof rack, tow package, running boards, etc. Mileage was 86k. One female owner, clean title, no accidents, brand new BFG tires. Exterior was in great shape except for fading on some of the fender flares, the side mirrors, the front grill, and the plastic trim piece on the tailgate. Additionally, the timing belt has not been changed (I'm pretty handy so I will do this myself). Interior was like new except for cracks in the dash, and a slightly funky odor (I already completely removed the carpet, steam cleaned it, and replaced the padding underneath). I paid $9200 for it.

Still wish I had 4x4, but this vehicle will be on the pavement 99.99% of the time, so it's not too much of a loss I think.

With the $$ you saved on the 2wd, you can get a rear true trac limited slip and be plenty of traction for your boat launch/recovery. Plus, 2wd are way easier to lift, (lift spindle).

Holy f%^& - lift spindles! I was excited, then I saw the $1500 price tag. I'm a spender, but even that is crazy! My 2WD will stick to 5100's thank you very much :)

Maxtrax lift spindles are around $5-600 if I recall correctly.
