V8 conversion

I finally had some time tonight to read some of the thread, ended up reading all 35 pages, and its now 1 AM. Lol. What an awesome build and a great write ups Singtoe. Members as knowledgeable and advanturous in their builds as you make this forum! Good to have you around as a resource by build thread, messages or the post I see from you all over this forum on just about any topic.

Wow...quite impressive! Have you ever calculated your new fuel mileage? Just wondering if your getting better mileage than your old 3.4 did? I don't know what kind of mileage the Sequoia originally got? I know when I transplanted an LS3 out of an GTO into my 2003 TJ, I picked up a huge mileage increase over the original 4.0...well as long as you can drive it "normal"! Not burning the tires off everytime you leave from a stop:zoom: I went from 13mpg to 18mpg in the city.

It is hard to believe that a this project started a year ago. Fuel millage is about the same if not better then the 3.4. I have not had a chance to do any highway trips but my daily commute gives 16 to 18 mph. If I am heavy on the throttle and play around a lot, the mileage goes down to 13 to 14.

I imagine my mileage would be much better if I didn't have such a restrictive air intake system.
 
Just out of curiosity is there a supercharger available for the V8 engine you put into your 4runner? If so, ever think about putting one in? It would be the ultimate sleeper.:guitar3:
 
Still the best mod done to a 3rd gen IMHO. Too much of a project for me to undertake though.

Your dad still enjoying the Sequoia? My brother bought one and loves it. Then again, anything is better than the Nissan Quest he had.

TRD does make a super charger for this motor but they have discontinued it. If I could find a blower for under a Grand, I will surely install one. One of my customers is a Toyota tecnical liazon to all the dealerships in the southeast. He reviews cases for recalls and what not. Anyway, He said that during his travels, if he finds any TRD old stock or take offs, he would pick it up for me.

My pops digs the sequoia. He has a Nissan Hard Body 4x4 5speed with a 4 banger but he still takes that his hunting trips. He doesn't want to dirty the sequoia all up.

Naa this is the next step.....450hp on pump gas 2uz. I'm switching it back to EFI. It's going to rip. ;)

I bought this Limited in Oct 2010 for 6k. It had about 165k on the odometer
A few days latter, I bought a wrecked 96 4runner for $600 but had to pay $40 to get it towed back to house.

I got my Downey off road Bilstein coil over lift kit and pan hard bar from it.
Parted the rest out for $3k

Got a free Sequoia Motor and sold my 3.4 motor for $1200

Spent
$175 for exhaust work
$150 for Eclipse Navaigation off forum
$200 for spidertrax
$80 for ghetto cold air intake
$40 for OEM floor mats
$400 for TB, WP, 2 Coil Packs, A/F Sensor, h20 sensor, Cat, Freon, AF and oil change
$100 for valve guide seals and valve cover gasket
$100 for electrical compents for the swap (relays, fuses ,butt connectors, heat shrink tubing)
$110 for electric fans
$75 for new battery (when I first bought it)
$125 for ricer radiator
$100 to shorten drive shaft
$80 to have AC line made
$100 for the AISIN manual hubs
$120 for new wheel bearings

So I have about $2375 in purchases
plus the $6000 for the 4runner
For a sub total of $8375
minus (the sale of the motor, the parts runner) $4200

So I have a grand total of $3,975 in my ride.

Sent scrap metal (steel, copper,and aluminum) to the recycler and got $300

Sold the 99 limited Tranny to Doc for $400 so the new grand total in my ride is $3,275.
 
Hey singtoe, does the valve on the dynomax vt really work how it's advertised? It sounds like a good idea, but I've seen videos of it, some love it and some hate it because the valve makes noise. But then I've also seen something about a 1st gen. and then a 2nd gen. dynomax muffler, so maybe that has something to do with it? I'm in between a rock and a hard place deciding on which muffler to get. I can hardly wait until it comes time to lift....

I will say the dynomax sounds just dandy on your truck!

i wanted the most free flowing exhaust and I didn't want to hear a bunch of drone.
This exhaust does exhaust does exactly that.

With one exception, there is some drone when cruising +85 miles per hour.

I can't hear the valve rattle. I like this exhaust very much.

Supercharging the 2UZ to any degree, one should consider some beefier rods. Apparently Lextreme makes some real nice forgies.

I sat and read all 36 pages at one. Brilliant. Incredible work here. I was sweating bullets that Singtoe had left the forum forever, a few pages back. And was like "YAAAAYYY!" when he returned triumphantly.

Singtoe, you are a genius. I wanted to do a 5 speed/V8/AWD swap in my 3rd gen so bad I got almost all the parts... then my truck was wrecked by a drunk driver.

Anyway, I think this build is awesome!
 
I saw a 1uz in the junkyard the other day..... I know yours is a 2uz but it made me think of this thread :)

The one thing I don't understand..... WHY would you replace an engine with an external starter with one that has it under the manifold? haha
 
Just read this entire thread start to finish and I gotta say - holy crap. The amount of work you put into this and the fact that you made everything work perfectly is damn impressive. Matching up two different ECUs and making it work, wiring up the cluster with all of the different gauges, even making the AC work. It's just those little things that separates a quality job from a "HEY I DROPPED A BIG ENGINE IN AND IT GOES FORAWRD HURRDURR" job. I'm a big fan of the former, and most of my friends would prefer the latter, so I really like seeing stuff like this done well.

Congrats and thank God you didn't leave this forum forever. I would have lost sleep without the ending to this story! Although staying up until 3 reading this isn't helping my sleep schedule either.

I couldn't have put it better myself! Singtoe is one talented guy! The only guy I know that has the genius and the skills that went into this build, is my cousin, who over the years built some incredible machines, however, his day job is an Aircraft Mechanic for Air Canada--- he repairs A340's and 747's for a living! I pass on my total respect to Singtoe!!
