Update -

My neighbor got his 16,000 pound tractor stuck in a muddy field. It was buried to the frame. First - I used the Taco to pull it out but the it couldn't pull it out. I could hear the steel wire strands of the cable popping so I stopped. I then got the 4runner out and together, they pulled the big ass tractor out of the mud.

Just went through the first 40 pages in a row... Damn!!! My girlfriends family has been harping me to do an engine swap as they do it in older vehicles all the time as well as fab stuff and what not... I have skimmed through your thread before with nothing but the thought that it wouldn't ever be more than a dream, but now... With their resources and help, it seems a little more than a dream!

You MUST get this all the damn time... But If you had the time for a question or two, thanks!! My runner is a 96 4runner limited 4wd with e-locker, 4.30s and 281k on the original motor. So no multi-mode and different dash.

So a couple questions include what 2UZ-FE model and years would you recommend (donor vehicle is incredibly important, not just parts)?

sounded like the 96 Trans and t-case are the same models as the vehicles with the 2UZ-FE, but with some different connectors between mechanical and electrical?

Would a tundra be recommended over the sequoia because of the dash alone?

Would the conversion be this older 4runner because it's simpler? Or would it be more difficult because of the greater difference in years?

(Every project is different and your experience will vary)

Thanks for all your time with your help, and thanks for taking the risk and working though such a daunting project (though your history made you more than qualified)!

Eric
Thanks Eric,

Question 1 - Donor vehicle is not that important as any will do. Using the Tundra will be easier as they are more analog and have no transponder key.
Using a Sequoia will be cheaper as their salvage bring significantly less then the tundra.

As for years to get - Any will do but the later models have VVTI which adds more HP, so naturally later is better.

Question 2 - Transmissions are the same but bell housings and torque converters are different. Input shafts will be different also. Older transmission have mechanical pressure engagement while later ones are more electrical.

Question 3 - You can just swap the motor, you don't need to swap the dash. I swapped the dash because my odometer said 75k miles and i wanted it to match the drivetrain. Tundra dash is easier but no swap is the easiest.

The dash is not mandatory for the swap but it makes it that much nicer.

I would use the 4runner's transfer case so the only wiring is just the 2UZ-FE ECU. Easy peazy.

I posted this from the PM just in case others had similar questions.

Last January a rock came off a truck and put a chip in the windshield. Then the cold weather caused it to crack.

I just found out that my Insurance will fix for me so the came out to my shop and replace it.

He put the new glass in and he also updated my glass seal to change it from recessed to flush. My aerodynamic and no wind noise.

Man I wish I could get a new windshield for free. My gasket buzzes with a crosswind and its super annoying.

Had a special visitor come to the shop.

A 2UZ-FE powered Tacoma.

Why didn't he just get a tundra? Must of REALLY liked the body style of a Tacoma because I think Tundras look very nice.
3rd gen and 4th gen 4runners however... I'll take a 3rd gen over a 4th gen if the 3rd gen was on fire and rolled down a hill.

uhhh... Because I didnt want a Tundra.

Yotaoffroad27 did an awesome job on that swap. And it leaves a sweet set of stripes on the pavement. Just ask the homies at the corner where my warehouse is. :zoom:

Well, this thread popped back up at a very, very opportune time.

For those who remember me, I'm coming back..and soon. Let's just say going through this read again convinced me to make a few phone calls around San Diego.

UGHHHH so jealous of the two beasts! already sold the motor and trans Rob, going to attempt the mounts tomorrow and start the swap.

Did we ever determine a ball park price and labor there after to make it work....I'm in need of a new motor......anyone want to trade?

You would need to source a donor vehicle. Sequoia looks to be the best if you want to retain the multimode transfer case. A Tundra donor will give you the typical j-shift if I am not mistaken. Edit - No it does not. The V8's that were in 100 Series LC's and 4th Gen 4Runner's have stronger connecting rods as well.

Ok that's makes good sense, Tundra might be better for the J pattern t-case,,,,err or maybe not. If I wasn't thinking super charger the UZJ100 and 4th Gen Runner would be top of the list. I wish there was a way to get the driveline out of a 2005 Sequoia (285hp most out of the 1st gen lineup, and 5 spd auto). I haven't time or money at this moment but since a new power plant is necessary something crazy isn't a bad idea assuming it could be done. I'm willing to trailer to NC...... :)

The 2005 engine has the highest HP because they changed the measurement standards the year after I believe.
