V8 conversion

I got a chance to really work on my truck today. First Time in many weeks.

I got the ecm wired, the fuel pump rister wired, the transmission wired, I lost my evap plugs, so i will have to comb through every inch of my garage to find them.

Still need to wire the transfer case and some electric fans.

Learned some interesting tibet today. The 4runner starter relay works through the ECM. When you turn the the key to start, it energizes the ECM which then checks to see if the 4runner is is neutral or park or if the Clutch is pushed in. If everything is good, then the ECM send energy to the starter relay.

The Sequoia has the Ignition switch wired directly to the starter relay and it it grounded through a neutral park switch.

Anyway, wired, crimped and heat shrinked 45 connections today. Will post pictures once it is cleaned up. Looks like a crime scene right now.

I will try to start it up tomorrow.

Yeah

Alright homies,

I Started the beast up. It is freakin awesome. It is starts right up, smooth, and revs beautifully.

AT first, it would not start. I was like wtf. I have like 50 plus connections - some thing got to be miss-wired. Oh Gee. Then I thought about the Transponder key, took the transponder amplifier from the Sequoia and wired it into the 4runner and loosely tied the Sequoia key to it and success. It started up.

Now my check list.

Program my 4runner key so that it works with the Sequoia ECM.
Find plugs, install and wire EVAP system.
Wire the Transfer case and front axle up.
Wire and install Sequoia dash cluster.

Wire and install electric fans

Shorten Drive shaft.
Relocate fuel filter.

Exactly. It's giving me flashbacks of my childhood building legos with my brother. He'd be in one corner building a perfect copy of the Taj Mahal while I was just trying to build some sort of box with a roof on it.

Another little tidbit of information. The transfer case of the 99-00 4runner limited is same as the 01-02 4runner and the Sequoia's

The 99-00 has the j-shifter and the rest have a H-N-L shifter.

They all have AWD but on the Sequioas, they label it 4wd.

To lock the center diff on the 99-00 LTD, you pull back on the J-shifter to 4H and this locks it up. Funny this is that it is not mechanical. The J-shifter is engaging a switch that controls an actuator motor which locks the center diff.

So anyway, any body interested in being able to lock their center diff at a push of a button?

Finished wiring the Transfer case.

Electrically - I used the Sequoia's ECM to control the engine and the transmission.

I used the 4runners 4x4 ECU to control the Sequoia's transfer case and ADD front axle.

I got to test the drive train this evening (just in place though). I still need to shorten my rear drive shaft but I was able to cycle through all the modes of the transfer case.

Started the 4runner up, put it in to drive and rear drive shaft was turning. Front drive shaft not turning.

Hit the AWD button and now both shafts are spinning (My hubs are unlocked so the front half shafts are spinning freely). Grabbed the front drive shaft and the rear output spun faster. Used the bottom of my shoe and stopped the rear output shaft and the front drive shaft spin faster. AWD works as it should.

Hit the center diff lock button and the front and rear outputs rotate at the same speed. Tried to grab the front shaft and would not stop. It was locked to the rear shaft for true 4x4.

Success.

Tried to program the Sequoia ECM to accept the 4runner's transponder key. I followed all the instructions but could not get it to sync.

Fail.

She is alive.

To avoid re-keying everything you could get in touch with an audio installer and find out what it is they do to run remote-start as they are bypassing the key receiver in the process. This would allow you to just operate the vehicle normally (I'm not saying purchase an auto start kit, just find out how they bypass the ECM when it's done). I know that even the most sophisticated theft systems that require keys and chips go by the way side when remote start is installed.

Very impressed.

I love the 4.7 in my Tundra. As much as folks opine about changing TBs, I still will take a belt driven Toyota over a chain one, at least for the moment.

I'll be even more impressed once you get that spider web all together.

Next I want to see you peel out of the driveway while your wife is holding the camera.

With 75k miles on the motor, I will probably change the TB this summer.

Did not get chance to wrk on the 4runner today.

Punch list

to be cont.

HOLY BIRDS NEST BATMAN!!!!!

You're in deep Singtoe. Real deep. You've got some brass ones to go at a wiring job like that... either that or enough money to be indifferent towards failure.
