Features of the 4.7 litre Toyota 2UZ-FE include an intelligent electronic throttle, all stainless steel exhaust system with a variable back-pressure muffler, direct ignition, a dual-sensor knock control system and multiplex diagnostics.
The Toyota V8 was designed for a combination of strong low-to-mid range torque, coupled with optimum reliability and durability.
The Toyota V8 combines some components from Lexus LS400's 4.0 litre V8 with key design features for 4x4 applications. It has two overhead camshafts per bank, directly acting on four valves per cylinder. Included valve angle is 21.55 degrees.
The intake ports are straight, for optimum engine breathing. The lightweight inner-shim type valve followers are crowned on the side sliding portion, to reduce friction.
The 4.7 litre V8 engine has a cast iron cylinder block and a larger displacement and longer intake runners than the Lexus LS400 engine, to maximise torque.
Parts shared with the Lexus engine are: throttle body, cylinder heads, connecting rods, piston pins, valves and valve lifters, camshaft belt auto tensioner, belt cover, water inlet housing, thermostat housing, idler pulley and the right-hand cam cover.
The EFI system is fully sequential, with an L-type hot-wire air flow meter to maximise accuracy.
The electronic control unit for the 2UZ-FE engine has multiplex on-board diagnostics, which can give the service technician a full history.
The 2UZ-FE V8 also has Toyota direct ignition, with separate igniters for all eight cylinders and super-long life iridium and platinum-tipped spark plugs. Direct ignition provides greater reliability and lower emissions.
The exhaust system consists of fabricated stainless steel headers for optimum engine breathing and a stainless steel tailpipe.
The Toyota V8 engine also has a two-stage main muffler, which reduces back pressure at middle to high engine speeds, to improve top-end performance.
