V8 Header Install

Returned to muffler shop this morning:
1) determined Bank 2, Sensor 1 was not completely connected. Fully engaged, no Check Engine light "high 5's" everywhere! Drove off, within 4 miles light was back, returned to the muffler shop.
2) same codes, replaced Bank 2, Sensor 1 with new Bosch O2 sensor. No Check Engine light, no "high 5's" this time, wallet $60 lighter. Drove off, again within a few miles light returns and I'm back to the muffler shop.
3) again same codes.
Muffler shop to have it checked by mechanic on Monday. Will post update.

Anyone had issues such as this with their DT Header install?

i would not use a bosch o2. order a denso, which is OEM. i know for a fact my jeep hated the bosch o2s and i feel like ive read our runners are the same way.
 
It could also be a wiring issue from plugging/unplugging. Really tight in there to troubleshoot but if thats the case they can throw all the sensors they want at it and it doesn't fix the issue.

BINGO!!! we have a winner!
Heard from the muffler shop this morning, the disconnecting of the battery did not work, codes returned.
Upon further investigation they determined during the header installation with the plugging/unplugging going on some wires were stretched and were no longer making contact.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions and assistance.

You're welcome, glad you got it figured out! I work in developing engine troubleshooting/diagnostics for a living so this one was kind of a gimme, wiring is the single most overlooked aspect of our electronic engines these days. High labor to troubleshoot and laziness but fixing a wire is cheaper in parts (not to mention fixes the issue) vs swapnostics with parts.
 
VSC Trac Lights Are Now On!

I spoke to soon, my wife picked it up today and informed me the VSC Trac and VSC Off lights came on. I disconnected the battery, reattached and as soon as I put it in gear the lights came back on!
The muffler shop said they paid another shop $212 to get the O2 harness repaired, I guess I'm done with the muffler shop and see what the Repair place has to say. Or should I just tackle the VSC light issue with the solution fix I have seen on this site?
Sometimes I feel as though I should leave well enough alone....this is getting old kind-a-fast!
 
If the lights are on it means a fault, figure out the fault and address the issue. Could be many things. But yes this is what we get for fixing something that's not broken. We do it all the time.
 
Also I would recommend getting a Bluetooth OBD2 Scanner. They start at about $5 on Ebay and Amazon. I spent $30ish and have never had problems with mine I don't know about the $5 ones.

There are free apps for smart phones that will scan and clear engine codes. They are not as "Full Featured" as the higher end scanners but are acceptable for most shade tree mechanics and it will save you a lot of time (and possibly money) running back and forth to have it scanned and or cleared.

Note: These only do Engine codes. They will not scan body codes such as ABS and Airbags and such.
 
Any thoughts on replacing the factory y-pipe? Eye-balling the system you can tell it's a bottleneck.

I finally got them done. I decided to go with Magnaflow high flow cats. All turned out well. I was hesitant to do it but I decided to cut off the air injection tubes and tig weld them shut. I had previously disabled it AIP so that wasn't an issue. What a difference this made for installation. I had both headers installed and torqued in under 30 min. I would definitely recommend it for anyone that isn't scared to do it and has or will take care of the AIP.

MMT, can you walk me through this? I wont be doing the work, as I don't have a TIG welder in the first place, but if it's an improvement, it might be worth giving my install shop some direction. Which are the air injection tubes? and how does this make the install go easier?

I've already done the [MENTION=8828]slyfox75[/MENTION] AIP bypass.

Tariffs on US made Headers

Hi Guys:

I was planning to order a set of Doug Thorley headers for my 06 V8 but it turns out there is now a 25% "counter-tariff" on all American made steel products imported to Canada. Needless to say, I am not going to pay that tax.

Can anyone recommend a non-US company that sells headers, the tariff only applies to American made products. I was hoping maybe there is a Japanese after market header that I could import from Japan?

That’s how I’d try to do it. 25% is rape! Might be a good time to plan a weekend at Niagra Falls, or something...
 
DT / Magna Flow install

I'm in Columbus so not local at all lol.

Header is 2.5" and stock y pipe is a 2.25" flange they say but yes pipe measures much smaller. Doug Thorley instructions show where to cut the stock cats but I just built a jig and had a friend weld extra 2.5" pipe and flange on for a bolt in install, no fitting and tacking on the truck. If I were to do it again I'd reduce it to 2.25" pipe and use a smaller flange to it would make to stock or URD y pipe better.

The delete changed the sound a bit with a flowmaster 50 muffler that I had before but I like it, even for a daily, it's still pretty mild. The headers themselves are louder than muffled stock manifolds which I'm a bit dissapointed in but that's just the nature of larger tubular headers. The power and and hopefully the fuel economy gains will be worth it.

I have the DT headers for my 05 4runner and I got the magna flow pipe / y pipe, part numbers 49698 and 51217..and I'm trying to come up with a way to poece his all together... believe there are two more catalytic converters that run in between the headers and these parts, but I'd rather not buy two more catalytic converters...anybody have some thoughts...although buying the cars may be the same as fabricating the pipes and flanges that run from the headers to the aforementioned magna flow pipes.

Yes I had to install spacers on the downstream O2 sensors to avoid the catalyst inefficiency faults (since they don't exist anymore) another option would have been the URD O2 simulator.

I chose this option because I live in a non-emissions state and didn't want to reuse the factory flanges so that I could leave my non-cracked stock headers intact. I think I had ~$50 in 2.5" stainless steel 2 bolt flanges and 2.5" stainless steel tubing. If I did it again I would recommend reducing to 2.25" 2 bolt flange to better mount to the stock or any of the aftermarket y-pipes available.

Yes by spacers I mean spark plug non-foulers. With no cats I required 2 on one side and 3 on the other. The downstream O2 sensors are the ones in the magna flow y pipe parts that you have already, they should be in front of the rear cats. The upstream O2 sensors are located in the headers themselves, do NOT space the upstream sensors at all, they are required for proper air fuel ratio. The downstream are only used to calculate the efficiency of the catalysts on the headers that are optional when installed the DT headers. O2 simulator I guess we have to use the universal one they have, I don't see one for our engines either. OR contact them an see if they can wire up a plug and play version for us, they probably have the connectors for us already.

Sorry for the delayed response, but thank you for sharing your knowledge: xmas + kids = chaos. I'm going to get moving on this and see how things turn out. I suspect if I'm still running codes I'll try the folders, too. But in definitely getting the pipe extensions on my headers. Thanks, again, and have a happy and safe holiday season.
 
Install Shops

I am also in Indiana. Anyone have any shops they recommend for an install? I've only gotten one shop so far to say they would do it, and quoted me $2300 to do so which seems outrageous...
