V8 mpg

What does everyone get for MPG with the V8's

I really wanted to stick with a V6 as this is what I have with the 2002 and the mileage isnt horrible. I keep finding good deals on the V8's and Im not sure if I should make the switch or not.

my v8, hand calculated gets anywhere from 15-18. oddly enough, almost exact what my old 4cyl got.

On the highway, we usually get ~24 mpg with our V6 and ~20 with the V8 (hand calculated, speeds averaging between 55-70mph, non-aggressive driving style, little A/C use, and stock ride height).

Many people don't see much difference between the V6 and V8, but I suspect that has to do with driving style, speeds, and mods, because in our experience the V6 is at least 20% more fuel efficient than the V8.

I get about 18.5 on my 2002 with 207K on it, and thats my commute to work and a little running around town. My commute is down a 55 mph flat road so I think that helps my mileage a little. This is in the middle of summer with no warming up daily. I get about 340 to a tank. I just dont want to jump to the v8 and have my weekly fuel costs rise. i dont need the extra power for towing as we have a diesel pickup. Just see way more V8's out there for sale as well.

yep, all v8's are AWD.

I haven't noticed any issues with it. its absolutely seamless. not like jeeps, that buck and jump when turning. you literally cant tell with the 4runner.

on a v8, make sure to engage low range, and the CDL. these are known to seize due to lack of use. on the v6, check 4wd, low range, and the CDL, for the same reason.

I've calculated one tank, and I got 19.3, and the computer indicated 19.8.

For 100% short trips and city driving it seems to show 14-17.

For moderate speed on the highway in the mountains it shows 19-22.

Off-road in 4H seems to be similar to city driving since the speed is low (probably 10-20mph average for 40 miles on that trip).

If I can consistently get 20 I'll be happy, but I've been doing more short trips around town than I would like.

It would be interesting if someone with a Scangauge or similar device could compare 2H vs 4H in a V6. You could drive a constant speed and switch between them and see how the reading changes. I don't think the built-in indicator would be good to measure it since it's not really instantaneous mpg.

I doubt many people directly compare them side by side like that, They just base their information off theirs and a variety of reports they read about the other one. The EPA shows about 10% difference, but the variation between vehicles, depending on how people drive, and between model years makes more difference than that in the real world. The EPA tests them under controlled conditions, so it's good for comparison even if it's not completely accurate. I bet if you took a large sample of data from V6 and V8 owners you would see a difference.

Pretty sure they made a 2WD V8. See attached. Wouldn't want you accidentally buying a 2WD.

I get like 275-285 miles per tank per the computer, and ~ 15mpg (also per the computer). Of course when looking for a V8, you'd want to know if the timing belt has been changed (like on the truck w/ ~134K you were looking at).

My '06 V8 never did much better than 16-17 per tank average (mixed driving).

My '05 V6 is seeing 19-20 though, so there is some advantage.

Honestly though, it's all sort of crap MPG—the tradeoff for a big, stout truck like this. That's why we have a Prius for commuting. :car:

I'm in the same boat as you. I read comments on here where people say the difference is "negligible" or "not much". Then I see numbers. Seems most people with the V6s are claiming around 20, and the V8s around 15-17. Thats a big difference when talking percentage. I'm holding out for a V6 after digging deeper into the numbers. That V8 is pretty indestructible though. Makes the decision so much harder.

Yeah, 2WD V8 here. If the V8 is listed as 4WD, I'm pretty sure it has all-time AWD as opposed to the V6's that have selectable 2WD.

well I just got mines and went through my first tank. half with origional tires and no lift and the other half tank was with my current lift and tires.

I got 16.6 mpg.. Hand calculated.

However that was due to low tire inflation. I normally run 37 cold psi.. I hope to get 18.

BTW My 3rd gen gets about 18.7ish. with lift and tires. So im pretty ok with 16 and having a v8. Im confident that I can push 18mpg.

If a couple mpg hurts your bank.. go with v6. If not get the v8.. I will end up losing 300 or so bucks in gas driving the v8 for the year. I guess limit my coffee intake to make up for it. :wtf: Im glad I got the v8.

If you plan on keeping the v8 stock with no lift.. im sure you can pull close to 20mpg. My lieometer said average 22ish before the tires.

are you accounting for the taller tires? the odometer will be reading a bit slow, so you wont show as many actual miles as you drive.

Also, 14mpg or so is about what I seem to be getting with my set-up after I installed my SpeedoHealer; since I have some extra weight with the bumper, skidplates, ect. and I do tend to be aggressive with the V8.
