I am not sure how much I can help, but I am good at brain storming, by good I mean great. Such as stuff like that. We are a ways apart so I am afraid that is all I can offer.

I think he's serious. 
From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I'd stretch it and tube out the bed. You don't have room under that bed for both axles, and clearancing the back of the cab would be an utter PITA.
I like the idea of bolting a divorced transfer case to the middle axle and driving that differential with planetary gears off the front output. Have you thought about what axles you're going to use? Quadrasteer on the rear axle would be pimp...

What would be even easier and cooler would be to just power one axle, and use tracks. :dance:

Even better would be to make it IFS, IRS, and IMS.
Use Sequoia front and rear diffs as the middle and rear diffs. Use IFS style a-arms and coilovers instead of link suspension and you'll have more room.

I think 6-wheels could be awesome, but I would want 2 of the axles steering so that you don't sacrifice on-road steerability by forcing wheel slip 100% of the time. That would make it significantly more difficult to do the conversion.

That's the point of the transfer case between the axles, though. With both transfer cases in 2wd, he's rear wheel drive like normal. Put the front (stock) transfer case in 4wd, and he's in 4wd. Then if he puts the rear transfer case in 4wd, he's got 6wd.

Reminds me of this:
Saw that thing the first year I went down to Moab. You would need to run Rockwell axles in order to get the true 6x6 drive, correct?

That's a Dodge TRex. It was 6x6 from the factory.
