V8 transmission coolers ? -aftermarket

Some of you may know by now that I cooked the transmission in my gx470 this weekend. I was able to limp it roughly 120+/- mi back home. By the time I got home I had no reverse, and slippage in all forward gears. It threw a code of p2714, selonid low pressure... I had 157*** miles on it and being a 04 its the first year of the world standard transmissions (meaning a sealed/non serviceable transmission), so it had probably never been flushed. I got a replacement Monday with 97*** miles. -FYI Lexus and Toyota use different transmissions -probably just different valving but not sure. Also 03 trans are different from a 04 from a 05-09, and that is the same on both the Toyota and Lexus side.

Anyhow I'm looking to upgrade the stock trans cooler, and put a inline filter in the system. Has anyone done a aftermarket cooler and if so what did you go with? I'm also looking to get one with a electric fan on it for low speed cooling (like I stop and go traffic). Any input would be welcome thanks!

Let me know if you end up with an aftermarket transmission temp sensor. That is one thing I hate is not being able to use my Torque app to monitor trans temp.
 
I suppose if I actually did some research instead of demanding to be spoonfed I will find it. Just would LOVE to be able to monitor my trans temps.

What were you doing to overheat the transmission? I don't usually hear of people overheating these things under normal driving/towing since they came with a factory tow package and ATF cooler. I mean, if you want to beef up the cooling system on the transmission by all means, feel free; but perhaps in this case you're overthinking this?

I found a transmission temperature monitor in Torque. Does it not work correctly? I had no way to know if the temperature it was giving me was right or not, but it seemed to be functioning.

It does come in handy for me when towing.

This goes back to a few old threads debating the temps shown on different devices. I tow a travel trailer over Colorado high passes at freeway speeds and have seen temps that appear to be "hot" but never have a light to verify it. We have no idea where the temp is being read nor whether or not the reading is accurate. Maybe it's not reliable and we're scaring ourselves over false readings.

I'd also like to know what caused the OP's issue.

Mine has Transmission Temperature (Method 1) and Transmission Temperature (Method 2). Method 1 does nothing. Method 2 seems to work although I have no way to make sure the values are actually right. On a recent road trip it varied between 155 and 180 degrees.

I have both the pan and downstream torque converter temperatures on my SGII. Look online for the codes to read them. I don't have the link handy.

Temperature light goes on when the torque converter discharge exceeds 305F.

I'll have to take a look next week when I'm back in town but thanks! My SG has never read over 260F IIRC.
 
Interesting that SG is able to find the data points but others aren't.

Does anyone know if TechStream will see it? Waiting on mine to get shipped in.
