V8 Transmission Problems – CEL P0776

Hey guys –

Yesterday my 4R would rev like it is in neutral when it tried to shift to OD, and today it won’t even shift from 3 to 4, although 1-2-3 is just fine. It also will not engine brake and just started throwing CEL code P0776 “Pressure Control Solenoid B Performance or Stuck Off.” The results of my Googlefu lead me to believe that I need to test my SL2 Solenoid (Solenoid B) and the connections going to it.

Any advice before I drain the transmission and drop the pan tonight? Anybody had an issue similar to this?

If the solenoid is faulty, I'll replace it, but if it is fine, it is likely the wiring harness.

Just in case this helps someone in the future, I thought I'd let you guys know how it turned out.

This weekend I drained the fluid, dropped the pan, pulled off the transmission filter, and removed the SL2 and SLT solenoids, which were believed to be the problem. I put 12v to each solenoid, and they seemed to work fine, so I reinstalled them with the intent of ordering new solenoids this week.

After getting everything back together and resetting the CEL, the 4R is back to normal. It slipped a little going into OD the first couple trips down the highway, but the shifting got better as the weekend went on. I plan on having the transmission serviced this week (drain and fill) just in case new fluid helps.

I hope this problem stays fixed for you. But...

3 years ago in our Chrysler AWD minivan, had the same problem. Changed fluid and filter, it got noticeably better for a while.

A few months later, we ended up having to rebuild the transmission, it locked up while driving one day.

Hope you have better luck than we did.

What year was the minivan? Was it an electronically-controlled transmission?

I didn't even change the fluid, I just took it apart, checked some things, and put it back together...so I hope I just had a stuck solenoid.

Electronic. I believe it is the 41AE

Chrysler Transmission Look Up Table

I thought I could do something with a solenoid, too. Checked for the grounding problems, etc. I even cycled the solenoids with the computer and they all seemed to respond. I replaced speed sensors, too.

In the end it was the transmission.

What does that have to do with your 4Runner? Only that the solenoid codes in the transmission are one of those prone to be misleading.
