V8 Whine

Hoping to get some help figuring out what is causing this whine.

In the video above, you can hear a whine in the first couple of gears and at idle. It sounds like a roots type supercharger.

So far, I've replaced the upper idler and tensioner pulleys. But the whine is still there at idle and in accel/decel through the first couple of gears. The whine is rpm dependent.

Car stats: 79k miles, new tensioner and idler pulleys, timing belt done 8k miles ago

Yea it's definitely there but hard to tell from an in cabin video. Mount the phone or whatever under the hood maybe?

I'll try to get a better vid, you have to crank the sound to hear it.

PS level is full, steering doesn't seem to impact the noise.

Tried turning off your A/C? I see your A/C light is on.

If not that, you might need to pop off your accessory belt and start the car to see if it is something on that belt.

Does it make the noise when revving in neutral?

Or like a blower fan, or speaker interference when not grounded properly, etc.. It could be a few things as someone mentioned due to the video being in the cabin..

Since when have you had a 4Runner? E55 bite you on maintenance?


As for the whine, if it's coming from up front and you can't narrow it down to an accessory, I'd probably say transfer case if it is a 4WD.

Could be - mine went out. But it wasn't so much a whine as a roar, as the bearing just loses preload but tends to keep its pinion height spacing. So the bearing tends to just eat itself up as it gets run with no preload.

Solution - rebuild a good diff with a solid spacer and new bearings. PITA amount of work to fix a few cent cost savings by Toyota.

Had it for about 3 weeks now. E55 had to go, got bored of it and a few maintenance items were on the horizon.

It's a 2WD. Are PS pumps or AC compressors a thing with these?
