Hey guys,

I recently picked up a '98 4R. I got the truck with one key. No key fobs, no spare key, no nothin'! LOL! I was poking around the truck and found a mystery antenna. I start tracing the wire and it turns out it is hooked to a remote starter. They system seems to be a Valet 552T. I have two questions. How do I tell if it works? How do I get a replacement remote without having the original FCC codes?

Well, I did some more research and it looks like that starter system is pretty dated. There seems to be two possible remotes for it, depending on the date code of the main control. One remote is no longer available, and the other is $35! For $45 bucks I can buy this system:

It looks like both systems were made by Directed (They seem to make most of the popular brands). I'm thinking I can just install the new system as I tear out the old system. They seem to have the same functions although the wiring colors and schemes seem to have changed a little.

One question...in the center console of my 4runner, to the left of the parking brake, there is a little panel that says "Toyota Security"...Can anyone tell me what this entails? I just have a plain steel key...no chip. Will this "Toyota Security" have any bearing on my remote starter install?

Please post your install. On the WJ grand cherokee Fourm someone did a step by step on installing that very same remote starter. I love the remote start on the Grand Cherokee that came with Grammies 04 limited and am considering putting one on my 04 Grand and the 97 4Runner

I am going to have to dig into the old RS install and see if there is any override module involved. Once I figure that out, I will order the new system. I will definitely write up the install.
