Valet Key and Aluminum Tag

I was just reading the warranty and maintenance guide and I have a question for you.

On page 6 Replacing The Key:
"Upon Purchase, each vehicle should have two master keys, one valet key and an aluminum tag with a key-code imprinted on it."

When I purchased my 4runner I received two master keys, but not a valet key or aluminum tag. Did any of you recieve this when you purchased your vehicle?

I purchased my 4runner back in April so I wonder if the dealership would still provide the valet key and aluminum tag.

I got mine. Talk to your dealer.
 
I don't think I got a valet key either. I have the key that slides into the master key - but I figured thats only good for the glove compartment.
Is the valet key another electronic key (I have the limited with the keyless start)?

I didn't get a valet key either. I just got to keyfobs one coming with the little metal tag.

The metal key that slides out of the fob also acts as the valet key on the Limiteds. Take it out, lock your glovebox ,take it with you and give the valet the fob.

Yep, our Maxima is like that. On the SR5 you don't have an intelligent key so you get two regular keys, the valet key and that little tag. Limited has the intelligent key which is really great for keeping in the pocket and not having to crank it old school.
 
My SR5 has them...

But do you necessarily need the aluminum tag to get an extra key made? I was thinking of just having a 3rd key made (Without the lock & unlock buttons) to give to the lady in case she needed to drive it ever, but I'm thinking you might not be able to just duplicate those keys like any other key. Does anyone know if they require a special transponder or can you just get a cheap copy made that would work?

This situation really irritates me. The manufacturers seem bound and determined to create bad feelings in their customers. In addition to making the dealer have to program the keys and TPMS (and hence have to charge for it), Toyota also makes them do the customer customizations. My dealer wants me to leave the vehicle all day for them to turn off the beep when I open the vehicle using the fob.

Part of the reason is that the car manufacturers are idiots when it comes to computers. If you have a working key it should be easy to program another key. You should be able to do this in a few clicks on a customer computer interface built into the car. Ditto with the customer customizations and changing TPMS. In fact you should be able to download apps to further customize the car.

Computers and smartphones have been around for a long enough time for us to expect car manufacturers to learn how to deal with a consumer interface.
 
haha i win the award for oldest thread revive!!! I would like to thank my mother and my many many wifes too many to mention and most importantly my dog....

Serious note and why i enacted my right to revive old threads is that I have no idea what the valet key does in the 5th gens... Is this the key i give a 16 old kid so i know he doesnt use excesive speed or is it simply to limit Valets from using all the feautures such as entune and set the alarm? Confused because my dealer gave me 3 Valet keys

Has nothing to do with Entune, can still set the alarm (drivers side door), just can't disarm / enable panic from a distance, can't lock or unlock the glovebox.
 
thats it the glovebox? wow i have 3 keys that dont unlock the glovebox i feel bad for asking

I received 2 master keys, the valet key and the aluminum tag. You should have gotten the tag. Its the key's key to get replicated in case you lost your 2 master keys.
