Value of 4Runner as 6th Gen arrive

I have bought used cars all my life which were behind on several generations. Ever since owning my 4Runner I stay a bit more up to date with value and the market trends. Just wondering what the thought's are on the 5th gen's value (especially on the refresh TRD PRO) when the 6th Gen comes out? I know this is such a vague questions as so many unknows are possible. Look at the FJ Cruisers, they hold their value very well and I feel that Toyota considers previous production line when producing something new. I feel Toyota tries to please the new crowd with value in new generations while trying to make the previous one "special" in a way with color schemes and trims and such. Amuse me and let me know what your opinion is!

even if they make another BOF, solid rear axle 4Runner the 5th gen will still hold it's value very well, but yeah if Toyota does something dumb the value will be ridiculous
 
I would expect a 20% decrease in value. My guess is the 6th gen will have significant improvements including a new motor and transmission along with an updated interior. The pricing will remain similar. The result will likely be that all of the 5th gen models will become less desirable.

Similar to most cars - all the 5th gen sub-models will merge in value with small differences.

Unless the 6th gen is simply a minor update to the 150 platform rather than a new model. In that case - less difference.
 
I feel the value of the 4th gen V8 went up or at least held firm after they removed the that engine option from the 5th gen.

You never know what's going to happen. Even the FJ prices seemed to go up after they discontinued it.

If they do something stupid in the 6th generation of the truck, the 5th will feel the benefit. Personally I hope Toyota figures it out, does something cool or groundbreaking but we all know how that story goes.

I already own a 4th and 5th gen, I probably won’t buy another with the direction things have been heading. I tend to gravitate to the older trucks to be honest, I still like my 4th more than my 5th.

If 6th gen comes front solid axle, 33s stock, V8, 10 speed transmission, electric sway bar disconnect, supercharger option... who am I kidding, 90% of people buy the 4runner for the road and occasional bad weather.

I'm assuming the difference will be similar to 4th gen to 5th gen. Slightly improved engine, better transmission, driver assists similar to Tacoma, updated look. They wont remove BOF or rare axel because then they're making the Highlander.

If they nail the look, 5th gens will decrease in value a bit, if not, we're safe. I'm assuming MPGs will go up due to better transmission and engine mods.
 
I think the look is why the 5th gen was so successful in terms of sales volume. I’m not particularly impressed with the powerplant and tune. I just hope they dont throw the 3.5 in there.

I’d like to see some improvement from a software standpoint. “Eco, Regular, Sport, Desert” drive mode settings which allow for a more aggressive engine and transmission programming. I can really care less about gas mileage when I am actually out trying to have fun. It would eliminate the needs for things like a pedal commander.

If they could only make the GX a bit more aggressive, it would absolutely cut into 4Runner sales. I love the GX, I just wish it didn’t look like I was driving my wife’s SUV. I do like the fact that it fly’s under the radar, it’s a very low key vehicle. Unless I see something remarkable in the 6th gen, ill get a Lexus GX or a Land Cruiser.
 
I think the sky is the limit when it comes to what can be done with the next generation of 4Runner's. It seems like more and more 4Runners are driven by folks that just don't use the full capabilities of the car anyways but are looking for more creature comforts. The more technology upgrades you add the less reliability and more stuff to break while out running the trails in my opinion.

From what I know which is limited, that a diesel may be an option but is costly to repair if needed. Image the training that it would take to get the technicians at the dealership trained in such repairs. I sure wouldn't want a newly trained technician working on my car. Thats just plain speculations on my part though.

Toyota may read the market which I think is a larger market than what is presented on this forum. We want to keep it simple in most aspects. Perhaps the release value will be higher for those buyers who understand that technological gimmicks do not replace known reliability.

Would you be the first to buy the new generation without knowing what the long term issues, if any are?

I agree with your comment. The looks of this car is what drew me towards 4Runner especially the limited colors. I enjoy seeing any color on the road though. However, the power on the car is lackluster but is bullet proof so that gives me a whole lot of satisfaction.

I don't think you're wrong.

I would add that tow other big factors; the cost of fuel is low and the "idea" that you can go "anywhere" helps sell a lot of these things.

I think a large portion of those drivers, would love a Jeep J-series but they're just too impractical for most so the 4runner mostly scratches both itches. They also seem to be the ones that want all the bells and whistles that you'd find in a Mercedes S-Class :shocked:
 
Coming from a 14 Tacoma and Tacoma World, we had similar conversations about what the 3rd gen would do to the value of our trucks.
The value went up. Especially at the beginning when the 3rd gen had major issues. The market held. I just traded my truck to the same dealer I bought it from and I got stupid money for the condition it was it.
Any first year of a remodel/major refresh will have its issues.
If it gets the 3.5 that’s in the Tacoma value of the 5th gen should stay high.
I decided to buy one now instead of waiting because of the 3rd gen Tacoma. Should be about the same as the Tacoma used market at the moment.
