Valve Adjustment Question on Shim Sizing

Hi guys,

Doing my valve cover gaskets today and in the meantime, I figure I would do a valve adjustment. The factory spec for clearances are:

Intake: 0.13mm - 0.23mm
Exhaust: 0.27mm - 0.37mm

My measured clearances have the following ranges:
Intake: 0.10, 0.13, 0.15, 0.18, 0.20
Exhaust: 0.30, 0.33, 0.35

It seems all my exhaust valves are good and only one intake valve is off (0.10mm). However, the one intake valve with a 0.13mm seems kind of close to the lower range of the spec. Would it be a good idea to replace that one also? Intake valves get tighter with time right? After doing this adjustment, I don't want to EVER have to touch these again!

From my experience, it's the exhaust valves that get tighter over time. You defenitely don't want an exhaust valve hanging open during combustion.

When you say tighter, that means the clearances get less right? eg. so my valve with a 0.10mm clearance is "tighter"?

Correct. Assuming you're using a feeler gauge, it would become harder to put the gauge between the lifter and cam lobe.

Mine are terrible.. I REALLY need to get onto it.

But there are 32,

and they are shim under bucket,

and removing VVTi cams scares me.

Make the .10 and .13 a .15 or as close as shim size gets you(may be a .16) I paid 7.80 per shim at the dealer. It may be worth making the .20 a .15 too.
