Valve Guide Seals

I bought a gasket kit. Even though the valve stems are the same size, the valve guide seals are different.

One is a red rubber, with a smaller hole, and slightly larger ribs on the i.d. The rubber covers the top of the metal cap. The back of the i.d. bore has an extra step before tapering to rubber end.

The other is a brown rubber with a larger hole, the ribs inside are slightly smaller and there is a single i.d. shoulder before tapering to rubber end.

Which one is intake and which is exhaust?

i think if you look on them one has ex or intake written on it but not completly sure

I had hoped, but the only writing is on the top of the brown. They say THG and 180* from it a number like 30, 58. The number changes.

are you changing yours because when u take them out you should be able to see

I took everything apart months ago. The old ones got thrown out.

RED are the exhaust seals. I had the same issue a few months ago.

That is what I was leaning towards based on what I remember pulling out. Its good to have a second witness on that.

How did you solve your issue, or better put, how did you find out for sure red are exhaust?

The exhaust valve stems were slightly smaller than the stems on the intake valves. So, the seals with the smaller hole for the valve are the exhaust seals.

I wouldn't think .0004" is enough of a difference for a definitive answer. The difference in hole size is much greater than that.

I finally got a call back from DNJ. This is gasket kit 9065. They said the seal with the larger hole is exhaust and the smaller hole is intake.

I will qualify that with it was on a voice mail and the person leaving the voice mail did use some incorrect terminology, but she knew the gasket kit I ordered without me giving her that info only the engine model, so I guess I have to believe her.

I just wish I could have spoken in person with her.
