So when I bought the truck a couple weeks ago it had a small oil leak that would drip for just a bit after driving it and it heated up. I kept trying to find where it was coming to but never could track it down. The previous owner had taken it through some serious mud because I washed probably 20 lbs of caked on mud and dirt from the undercarriage. I hosed it all down and sprayed the lower engine, tranny and surrounding lower areas with degreaser to try and pinpoint the leak. I checked the usual suspect but the valve covers were bone dry. I have never seen a difference in oil level either, I have been checking it constantly. Since it was dripping from around the bellhousing I just assumed I was in for a real main seal job, so bought the seal and have been waiting for the time to drop the tranny and do it. Well each time I would drive it since doing 2 degreaser jobs and hose downs, it seemed like less and less oil would drip to the point a few days ago where it just seemed to stop. Is it possible there was just a bunch of old oil built up somewhere that would heat up and drip down and now that I have cleaned it really well that's just it? Or is it leading me into false hope... I put almost half a bottle of seafoam in the crankcase the other day (after already noticing that the oil drip had stopped) and have driven it around a bit to clean everything out and still am seeing no drips. I really don't WANT to drop the tranny if I don't have to, but already have the main seal waiting for me. What would you guys do?
