Vansnxtweek's Build Thread

Well I want to go ahead and get my story going on here so I can start keeping track.

What I have is a 2000 T4R SR5, 4wd, 230k miles. She has had a rough life!!! She has been totaled and rebuilt, had the transmission replaced, the head gaskets replaced, lots of front end work, and still many more troubles to deal with. BUT....I love her!

This was my fiance's vehicle originally. While she was still driving it I did some basic maintenance on it, and I put some subs in it along with all new door speakers. Then came the problems....

The first major issue we had with it was the head gaskets. She said she was no longer getting any heat. When I checked the coolant level I knew we had a big problem. Sure enough after adding coolant, the next morning when I drove it to work....BOOM the temp gauge shot up...I knew that was all she wrote.

So after about a month of doing my first V6 cylinder head gasket(s) replacement and rebuild, she fired right up! I was pretty ecstatic..not going to lie. I had confidence in my skills after many years of motorcycle work but this was still a little step up from what I'd done previously. It ran great! I was pretty nervous to drive it more than out of town until finally I got forced to drive it 45 minutes when I needed a part for my Super Duty and I had no other way to go get it. So I went for it and she did great!

Once that was done, my fiance continued to drive it back and forth to work until one bad day she called me to tell me she had been in an accident. Some dude in an Explorer slammed into a Porsche Cayenne going about 65 and the Porsche then slammed into the back of the 4Runner. Thankfully my poor fiance was okay for the most part but it really hurt her neck and back. We didn't care about the vehicle much at all at this point.

When it came time to deal with the 4Runner, I really didn't think the damage was enough to consider it totaled but that's what the insurance company determined.

Well...we didn't want to get anything else for what they were going to give us for the 4Runner and we didn't have enough to make up the difference for something more so we went ahead and took the money, bought it back, and had it fixed. Our local body shop, Knox, did a freaking AWESOME job. I was ecstatic with how well it turned out.

She was back in action!

About this time is when my fiance and I pretty much permanently swapped vehicles. She had been driving my Grand Cherokee the whole time while the 4Runner was getting fixed and I think she got used to a smoother/quieter ride, better MPGs, a bit more power, and less issues. It really worked out for the better so I could keep the red headed step child closer under my surveillance. I can't even tell you all how many times I had to drive an hour to her work to fix whatever the next problem was with the 4Runner.. By this time we had already shared quite a bit of blood, grease, and beer together.

I knew there were a few issues going on so I went ahead and put the truck up on jack stands and low and behold....the right side CV axle boot was busted and slinging grease EVERYWHERE. The OTRE's were both busted. I could physically move the steering rack back and forth by hand. It needed some TLC bad.

I went ahead and did the LBJ's (OEM of course), OTREs, ITREs, steering rack bushings, CV axle, both Air/Fuel sensors (CELs), new rear shocks, and while I was at it I put on some ditch lights, and an OEM fog setup I found on the classifieds to feel like I did something fun during all this mess.

Once I first got it all back together and aligned I couldn't believe how much better it rode! Man those rear shocks were TOAST. The steering was so much tighter. I still can feel that slip joint issue that needs to be addressed but once I do that it will be much better.

Picked up an OEM "Skid Plate". This would definitely not hold up to any skidding of any sort....but it looks good and the resale on it will be easy if I ever decide to get anything more heavy duty. Maybe its just me but it seems to sit way too low. I plan to cut the brackets, take an inch out of them, and reweld them back to bring the plate closer to the bumper.

Ever since I got into 4Runners I have always liked the Satoshi grills. I really liked the ones SRQ Fab had done in the past so I decided to go with one of those. It took them 7 weeks to get it to me but I will say they did an excellent job. When I put it on I'm not going to lie, I didn't care for it. I don't know what it was but it just didn't look as good as I'd hoped. I think part of the problem is the street tires and the overall plain look of the truck with a huge Toyota emblem on the front. I decided to leave it on though and it has grown on me. I think it will look even better once lifted but I'm not going to let my OEM grill go just yet.

When the accident happened all they could find was a replacement hatch that had no spoiler. I found a spoiler on the classifieds and Knox went ahead and installed it for me for no charge. Looks so much better!

Someone in the past who installed this radio did not know what the heck they were doing. The wiring was all jacked up the first time I went into it and I'm pretty sure they shorted something causing the dimmer switch to no longer work. Still something I need to figure out. In addition, I guess they felt the need to install no dash kit so all their sh*tty work could be easily seen by whoever rode in the vehicle. So I went ahead and bought a dash kit. $10 well spent. It's the little things.

Pulled off the stock running boards. I swear I went back and forth over this 100 times but once I did it I really did like it, other than the crappy looking undercarriage that is now exposed. I plan to take care of that when I get it in the garage here in a few weeks.

I have been working 72 hour weeks on nights for the past 6 weeks so I have had a lot of time to think about what lift/wheel/tire setup I want to go with. I'm sure many of you have seen my questions on the forum (sorry). FINALLY I made my decision and I ordered my wheels/tires tonight. Lift will be ordered sometime next week.

I decided to go with SCS Ray 10s in black with Cooper STT Pros in a 285/75-16. I swear I looked at every possible combination in the entire world and honestly, I came back right to where I started. Should've decided on that setup in the first place! I learned a lot though so its all good. For the lift I'll be going with the ToyTec Boss/Ultimate lift. I suppose I'll get the 600lb springs even though I do plan to get a plate bumper in the future, I just have no idea when.

I also have some issues I have to deal with before I do that fun stuff. The P/S pump is making quite a racket so I got one of those to replace with. I also have a super annoying manifold leak on the driver's side that I'd assume is coming from the gasket I installed while doing the head gaskets. :brick:

Wow nice progress! The headunit probably has the orange illumination wire hooked up which will fry the dimmer switch, happened to mine when the yahoo’s stole it. I bought a new dimmer switch off eBay for a few bucks and installed another head unit properly and it works. You can also jump the switch if your dash lights aren’t working to get you by.

Thank you!! Man that's awesome! I didn't realize that could cause an issue. I'll take it out today and check it out. My lights are working they're just so dang dim. It annoys me. I have thought about doing LEDs but I don't want the hotspots. I'd like to replace the oem lights and get the switch working.

Looks great, can’t wait to see it lifted. Glad you salvaged it and are giving it a second chance at life!

Thanks man! I'm trying. I'm kind of bummed right now though, I may have run across a large issue.

Almost looks as if the previous owner may have been dropping a boat in salt water repeatedly and never spraying it off. Don't see much rot anywhere else at all.

Does anyone have any experience/advice for attacking this rust issue? It seems so odd to me but this is the only place I see like this on the frame.

Thanks

Know anyone with a 220V welder and some talent? It looks like the body mount is compromised too, so I’m not sure what you could do short of hacking off part of a junk frame and splicing it into yours. Having the hitch there might work pretty well as a fixture to tack it all in place.

But I know nothing of that realm so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the advice man! I've talked to a few people. Looks like the best bet will be to cut off the body mount, get the bad metal out, weld in fresh and reattach the body mount.

It can be done.

For some more positive progress...got the power steering pump swapped yesterday. Sounds way better and steers smoother! Pretty sure I could've gotten away with just cleaning the screen and reinstalling the old pump but I had the pump and wanted to be sure. The screen was COMPLETELY covered. Pretty interesting how small the pump is once the reservoir is off.

Also got my tires and wheels in! Lift should be here Thursday. Freaking STOKED!
