Venom Performance module

I saw a review of one of the Venom products on one of those Sunday morning Truck shows. I can't remember what vehicle, but they showed a solid improvement on the dyno.

I'm interested to hear if anyone has experience using one on the 4Runner. My '96 5-spd is painfully slow...

Avoid it;it won't do much with an NA engine since you can't produce more ponies w/o adding more fuel and air and w/o forced induction you can't get any more air in the motor to make noticeable ponies.

I'm sure there are noticable gains aside from boosting the car (being that most 4Runners are not boosted) and this is vehicle specific. Also as far as I'm aware the motor suffers from a lack of breathability in stock form (hence the 8whp gain from an intake). Beyond that most factory tunes leave much to be desired. I guess if no one else has tried it I can be the guinea pig. Hopefully someone will chime in.
 
I've seen a version tested on a 3rd gen and dynoed and it saw about 8whp and that can be acheived by opening up the airbox.

You can't make enough HP for the cash outlay on our 3.4s,it just can't happen short of forced induction.

I drag raced a fuel injected turbo car for 9 years and with NA there is little you can do except get it to ingest more air and evacuate exhaust quicker is your best bet for gaining performance.
 
I disagree, if the factory fuel and timing curves are for 87 octane then if done correctly you will see gains. I never believed in chips until I had BMW's and Jim Conforti's Shark injector will make a believer out of anybody with the DYNO results to prove it. I have also used power programers on 1996 and up mustangs and I know they work also, went from 8.2 0-60 to 7.7. But some of that was transmission software upgrades. The most gains I saw were on my 328is, not my M3 or M coupe because they were already highly tuned. It made that car wake up. But as he stated you may pick up more horsepower cheaper, and do they really know what they are doing? If you have a restriction like the airbox or exhaust that really is the bottleneck then a chip may not help as muck, but do those mods and with a real chip you will see more gains then without it.
The key is to do your research, see dyno results and buy wisely.
 
Transmission upgrade alone could drop a few tenths zero to sixty so the programmer might have given you one of those tenths.

Any real dyno numbers?

Getting results on higher powered motors is different than tuning a 183hp 4Runner motor and I've yet to see solid evidence of those producing anything specifically on the 3.4 that worth the cash outlay.

What kind of HP would you expect from that module?
 
I guess it depends on your definition of value. For me, 10whp would be well worth 250 or 300 bucks.

And it might not change peak HP at all, but it could still improve driveability. I would guess it advances the timing down low, but maybe not...

It would be good to get some specs on what it actually does before making a decision either way.

Opening up the airbox and running a good flowing filter will net you about 8whp and is essentially free but along with a good filter and the deckplate ring and cover (to return to stock and keep water out during off road adventures) will come to less than $50.

I have this mod and it did improve acceleration (1 tenth at the strip) in the mid range but MPG increase seems to be pretty negligible for me to post any real results but I'm still keeping track.

I think you might be disappointed with your couple hundred dollor investment unless you're one of those guys that will feel the improvement just to justify your cost.

I do some research and find real unbiased evidence that those modules will work on a 3.4 before you possibly throw money away.
The 3.4 has been around a while and short of FI I've seen little gains and I've been looking for any reasonably priced power options for 3 years w/o supercharging.
 
Sure, 6 or 8 hp may not be much, but if you find 3 or 4 ways to up the power by that much and it will be noticeable for sure.

and I'll stick by my comment that peak HP shouldn't be your goal.

Then by all means open your wallet but these motors have been around a while and there is just minimal tuning tricks that have been proven to work.

There are power junkies over on yotatech that have researched the 3.4 and have explored power options and w/o SCing or turbocharging there isn't much else to be gained without tearing the motor apart,

Open up the intake and exhaust are the most proven and cost effective but even going with headers too you might see 15whp if you're lucky.

The Venom module is a waste of $$$ on the 3.4 in NA form and it is proven and I saw it.

Venom used to sell a module for my '93 Eclipse and promised 20whp and yes it could produce that for a $350 investment but I bought a manual boost controller for $50 and saw over 20whp and then I added a Apex S-AFC (air flow convertor) which allowed me to control the airflow signal to the ECU and force it to throw more fuel to the mix at 500rpm increments and it monitored everything the ECU could read.

On top of that I had a cheapie Palm Pilot with datalogging software which alllowed me to log my runs and tune my car at will.

Total cost:about $400 and saw a gain of over 80whp on the stock turbo and dropped almost 1.8 seconds off of my 1/4 mile time.

I'm just saying there's better ways to get the same performance for less money.

That whole post is confusing...

How was it proven? Did you see dyno results? I'm just curious as the original poster is looking for opinions based on experience or fact.

I understand you can add a $10 home depot manual boost controller to almost any turbo-charged car and pick up more HP than most other mods. I don't see how that is relevant. My S4 has 500hp, but it doesn't really relate to the 4-Runner.

If you can pick up 8hp from an intake and 10hp from an exhaust, why wouldn't you want to pick up 10hp from a gadget that modified the timing and injector pulse-width?

Does it offer the same "bang for the buck" as a $60 home-made intake kit? no... Could it be worth $300 if it works? yes...

I don't know if the Venom product works on the 4-Runner. It might lose HP... But, trying to say it's a waste of money without any proof to back up the statement isn't helping the original poster at all.

Ok,then find some real evidence it works. I'm going by the info I've read and seen since the Venom modules have been out for the last 10 years.
The '01 Runner with a Venom module took two hours of fine tuning on the dyno I saw in '04 and it peaked at 10whp with a steady 3-5 through the mid range and the module was added at the same time the intake and exhaust was done.

I wish the runner would've been dynoed with just the intake and exhaust since from what I saw those numbers could've been produced without the module.



I've yet to see real results on any NA car from any of those magic computer modules including the ones from Jet.

Also avoid the throttle body spacers which are just a $80 paperweights on direct port injection motors.

Sorry,if it got confusing but I was just showing that I got the same whp for $50 vs the Venom module would've produced on my Eclipse for a few hundred bucks.

If you do the exhaust and intake upgrades you've pretty much maxed out what whp you can produce short of porting and a little computer module will show even less of a gain on the 3.4 once you've done that.

If the Venom was such a great investment you should easily find info on the net of it's worth.

What real world results are you trying to see?

In my opinion (not that its worth anything) but for $400 plus the hours on tuning and labour and what have you - to gain 8whp, its not worth it.

Open up the Intake, increase the exhaust pipes a 1/4" and take off some unnecessary dragand weight off the truck - and you'll be happy.

I'm actually debating on removing the spare tire from under the T4R. Only because it'll never see the path and it has CAA coverage. Also - taking off the roof rack which was a pointless thing (for me) to have to begin with. Also, IF I took off the front bushguard - in total - I would save over 100lbs easily PLUS the vehicle would be more aerodynamic - leading to a little more power and better fuel mileage.
